Royals smash Yankees in second game of series
By Jeff Taebel and L. Kent Wolgamott
The Kansas City Royals got sweet revenge on the New
York Yankees Wednesday as they drubbed the Bronx
Bombers 10 to 4 in the second game of their best of five
American League championship series.
Kansas City got one run in the first inning and pro
ceeded to chase Yankee starter Ed Figeruoa in the second
as the Royals batted around, scoring four times.
The key play in the inning occurred when Fred Patek
bluffed a bunt and hit a grounder to Yankee shortstop
Bucky Dent, who attempted to force baserunner Clint
Hurdle at third.
baseball
Dent's throw hit the sliding Hurdle and rolled into foul
territory, allowing Hurdle to score.
Frank White followed with a single up the middle, driv
ing in two more runs. A fourth run was added when White
scored on Darrell Porter's single.
The Yankees made a comeback bid in the seventh,
scoring two runs off winning pitcher, Larry Gura before
reliever Marty Pattin came in to retire the side.
Royals respond
The Royals responded with three runs in the bottom of
the seventh, on three extra-base hits, capped by 5'4" Fred
Patek's two-run homer to left field off Yankee reliever
Dick Tidrow.
The Yankees battled back in the top of the eighth,
scoring two runs on four singles.
Kansas City again met the Yankees' challenge by
adding two more runs in the bottom of the eight, in a
rally highlighted by the aggressive baserunning of Kansas
City centerfielder Amos Otis.

With his two stolen bases Wednesday, and one in the
first game on Tuesday, Otis has tied the league record for
stolen bases in a playoff series.
The Yankees were retired in order in the top of the
ninth by Kansas City reliever, Al "The Mad Hungarian"
Hrabosky, who ended the game on a note of personal re
venge, by striking out Reggie Jackson, who tagged
Hrabosky for a three run homer in Tuesday's game.
Moves to New York
The series will move to New York City Friday after
noon with Paul Splitorff scheduled to take the mound for
Kansas City, opposing the Yankees' "Catfish" Hunter.
The Yankees qualified for the league championship
series by beating the Boston Red Sox 5 to 4 in a one game
intradivisional playoff Monday.
Tuesday's playoff open in Kansas City was an entirely
different story, however, as the Yankees blasted the
Royals 7 to 1 .
The Yankess got strong ptiching from rookie starter
Jim Beatty, who lasted 5-13 innings, allowing only two
hits and one run. Beatty was lifted in the sixth in favor of

fireballing reliever Ken Clay, who held the Royals hitless
for the remainder of the game.
The Yankees blasted loser Dennis Leonard for three
runs on nine hits in the first five innings.
The first in a long parade of Kansas City relief pitchers,
Steve Mingori, fared little better, as the Yankees jumped
on him for five hits and three runs in his 3-23 innings of
work.
Mingori left two men on base with two out when he
left the game in the eight, leaving Kansas City's relief ace
to face the Yankees' controversial slugger, Jackson.
Hrabosky stepped off the mound to psych himself up
before pitching, but it was to no avail as Jackson unloaded
Hrabosky 's second delivery for a three-run homer.
The Royals got their lone run in the bottom of the
sixth as Hal McRae sacrificed George Brett home from
third.
