daily nebraskan Pickets were down Tuesday and members ordered back to work, as local Communications Workers of America officials and Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph officials met to work out contract agreements. A note from Rex King, president of local 7470, to union members read in part, "All members should go back to work at their scheduled time, or as soon as possible. All pickets should be removed." The wildcat walkout against LT&T began at the company's main building at 1440 M St. at noon Monday, as union members marched and held picket signs reading, "LT&T Breaks Contract". One union member said the walkout concerned senior ity. "We bid by seniority on jobs " he said. "They (LT&T) Wednesday, October 4, 1978 took people with the least amount of seniority, and put them on jobs over people with the most . . . they violated the company contract." Dick Nealy, public relations director for LT&T said the contract violation was made in working with new electronic switching equipment. According to Nealy, only certain personnel are qualified to operate this equipment and therefore the seniority scheduling procedure had been changed to allow qualified employees to man the equipment. He said management personnel filled positions vacated by the walkout, such as long distance and directory assist ance operators, and were "able to avert any major problems."
