AW W fit spotligli i r lik ft p I urn- hi i J The Metropolitan Opera's Peabody Award-winning 'Live From the Met' series will premiere its 1978-79 season on PBS on Monday, Sept. 25, with a performance of OTELLO, Verdi's masterpiece of jealousy and love. Funding is made possible by a grant from Texaco Inc. Verdi, after sixteen years of retirement, was lured back to music by some of his close friends and associates. His love for Shakespeare plus a collaboration with the noted composer and poet Arngo Boito led to the production and ?rand premiere of OTELLO at La Scala, Milan, on Feb. 5, 887. Singing the principal roles will be soprano Renata Scotto as Desdemona, tenor Jon Vickers (pictured) as Otello end baritone Cornell MacNeil as lago. Other members of the cast are Jean Kraft as Emilia, Raymond Gibbs as Cassio, Andrea Velis as Roderigo and James Morris as Lodovico. The opera will be conducted by James Levine, Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera. Adapted from Shakespeare's masterpiece 'Othello.' Verdi's opera is set in Cyprus around the 16th century. It is the tragic story of a Moorish general caught between the love for his gentle wife Desdemona and the uncontrollable jealous rage which consumes him. His ensign lago plots his own advancement by preying on Otello's suspicion of Desdemona's infidelity. Otello. easily conquered by lago's evil fabrication, strangles Des -emona, then stabs himself upon learning of lago's treachery. OTELLO is certainly a tragic love story but its richness of characterization moves it beyond a tale of ill-fated lovers. If it is primarily a love story, then why is it not titled (by Shakespeare or Verdi) OTHELLO and DESDEMONA? While we see a man at the mercy of another's conniving, we also see a man at the mercy of himself. Simple and overwhelming as it seems, lago's horrible plan could not have worked if Otello's jealousy had not been so quick to catch fire. Like that of other tragic characters. Otello's flaw is an emotion gone out of control, undermining every shred of his self -trust. To ask why and how he comes to this end is to find a deeper understanding of the story and perhaps, of ourselves.
