Wednesday, September 20, 1978 daily nebraskan page 19 Weightlifters waiting qualification Bv Brad Hnrkv .. . .... 13y Brad The University of Nebraska Weightlifting Club's future for the upcoming season is brighter than the 77-'78 club, even though that squad qualified 11 lifters for the national championships. How can this be? Mainly because if the weightlifting club qualifies lifters for nationals this season, they'll probably all get to go. Last season only three of the qualifying lifters made the trip to the championships in Louisiana because there was a shortage of funds. Those three lifters-Monte Lofing, Jim Dier, and student coach Marian Mormann-paid their own way down. "This year well hopefully have the funds to send our qualifiers to the '79 meet in Florida," head coach Boyd Epley said. "The lifters' efforts will not be lost. They'll have something to look forward to. Women's class "This semester we've constructed a weightlifting class for women," Epley said. "From the profits of the class, it will greatly help on our expenses to the nationals. We want to fly as a long drive would drain out lifters." Epley pointed out that all the money from the class will not go to the team itself. "Some of the money will go to T-shirts for the women signifying their membership, for jump ropes, and we want to hire a nutritionalist this year." Epley said anyone can join the club, but to make There still is one opening for the Niobrara canoe trip being sponsored by the UNL Recreation Department this weekend. 'To be on the team you have to reach a standard of 3 on a 14 scale. So you can see how we need more members to support the team. You never know when someone can just walk in and help the squad," Epley said. National champs Epley, who has been with the weightlifting program since 1970, has had three national champion lifters, Tom Pollard (123 lb) in 1976, and Mike Arthur (132 lb.) and Tim Evans (181 lb.) in 1977. Mormann feels 'he club has the tools to win a national championship this year. "Last season at nationals our three man total would have been good enough for a fourth place finish if we had entered as a team," Mormann said. "We could have won it all with a full team. Lofing placed third, Dier placed third, and I finished second. "This year we've got the athletes. With hard work and dedication we could win the championship," Mormann said. According to Epley, Lofing, Mormann, Bill Toscas, and Walt Burne look like the lifters to watch for the upcoming year. Any women or men who want to join the club, should attend the weighlifting club meeting tonight, (Wed.), at 7:30 in the Coliseum. Or interested people can call 472-3116.
