Never tell the Missouri Tigers there's
a stigma about winning on the road.
College football's most unpredictable team
proved the pickers wrong again last week
with a stunning 3-0 upset of Notre Dame in
South Bend.
This time Warren Powers was on the
sidelines in his coaching debut for Missouri.
Former coach Al Onofrio engineered
seven previous road upsets in seven years at
Missouri. Onofrio also was victorious at
South Bend, taking a 30-26 win over the
Irish in 1972.
The Tigers' other recent conquests in
clude victories over Nebraska in Lincoln,
21-10 in 1974 and 34-24 in 1976; the
season opener over USC at Los Angeles,
46-25 in 1976; a 22-2 Twin over Ohio State
in Columbus also in 1976; a 15-0 shutout
over Arizona State at Tempe in 1977 and
a 1975 season opening 20-7 rout of Ala
bama at Birmingham.
Challenges seem endless in Missouri's
football schedule. Jumping out of the
frying pan and into the fire may best des
cribe Warren Powers' problems this week as
his Tigers take on No. 1 ranked Alabama.
