With the help of some hard running by I. M. Hipp, a very opportune defense, and some razzle-dazzle, Nebraska over came five turnovers and prevented what would have been the worst start for the Huskers since the 1957 club under coach Bill Jennings. California had recovered a Jeff Quinn fumble on the Nebraska 27 with 6:54 left in the third quarter and was leading 14-7. But the Black Shirt defense held and the Nebraska offense marched 84 yards in nine plays, with fullback Rick Berns going the final 14, to switch potential disaster into a momentum builder for the Huskers. Nebraska's defense then forced the Bears to punt and took over on the Cal. 42 after a clutch return by Kenny Brown. UNL scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 32-yard scoring strike from Tom Sorley to freshman wingback Maurice McCloney. McCloney, whose picture didn't even appear in the official program, also set up Nebraska's first score when he was on the receiving end of a Sorley to Hipp to Sorley 57 yard pass that carried to the Bear 14. "I was hit hard (at the 1 5), but I was determined to score," said the Beaumont, Texas, native of his touchdown play. "I wanted to score on that long pass in the first half but the defensive back had too good of an angle on me." Former fourth stringer McCloney, who was on the fourth unit last spring due mostly to knee surgery, pointed out that, "I knew if I was going to work my way up I had to work hard, so I concentrated on getting myself ready." Nebraska's fourth score of the day came on the next series. Defensive tackle Bill Barnett sacked Bear quarterback Rich Campbell, jarring the ball loose. End L. C. Cole pounced on the ball in the end zone for six points with 12:37 left in the game. The Huskers elected to go for a two point conversion and a little trickery. Sorley pitched to Berns who in turn threw back to Sorley for the two points to bring the score to 29-14.
