Matinees Sat & Sun U.K. melding creates 'total sound5 By Jeff Taebel The music scene in Great Britain has, of late, been dominated by hard-driving new wave music, "power pop" and vacuous bubblegum. This is not exactly the kind of environment that would seem likely to inspire a group of well-known British musicians to form a highly sophisticated band that plays subtle and complicated music. album review Yet this is what Eddie Jobson, John Wetton, Allan Holdsworth and BUI Bruford have done by forming U.K. As a result, their self-titled debut album contains some of the most interesting and refreshing music to come out of England this yea? U.K. may indeed be the first British "supergroup" to appear since the demise of Blind Faith. All of the band's members have dealt with star status in the past. Eddie Jobson, who plays keyboards and electric violin, has worked with later editions of King Crimson as well as other British bands. John Wetton, who replaced Greg ww wm a 8 Sheldon Art Gallery, IZth & K LIKE A ROSE "... a probing and insistent analysis of the concrete conditions of existence at a women's prison . . ." and AINT NOBODY'S BUSINESS BUT MY OWN A fascinating and extremely well-made color doc umentary that shows the everyday, behind-the-scenes lives of prostitutes. today at 3, 7, & 9 p.m. Admission $2.00. Lake as King Crimson's bassist and vocalist finds himself in the same role with U.K. Drummer Bill Bruford has done stints with both King Crimson and Yes. Session musicion best Perhaps the finest musician of the group is Allan Holds worth, whose incredibly melodic high-speed guitar work was a strong point of Jean-Luc Ponty's band. Holdsworth also has been a sought-after session musician as well as having worked on a number of solo projects. The previous stardom of the individual band members does not seem to have created any noticeable ego problems from U.K. The group seems committed to creat ing a total sound with solos kept to a minimum. The band members all have contributed songs to the album, they all move along a somewhat similar vein. The music reminiscent of some of the work of King Crimson, Yes and various fusion bands. Wetton does a good job on all the vocals sounding rather like a rough and rugged Greg Lake. His bass work, coupled with Bruford 's combustible drumming, provides an excellent moving backgound for Jobson and Holdsworth to take off from. Specific songs Sie one of U.K. is highlighted by a Wetton composit ion called "In The Dead Of Night" and a song which Wetton, Bruford and Jobson co-wrote, entitled 'Thirty Years." Wetton delivers a powerful lead vocal on "In The Dead Of Night," which jumps along to a syncopated beat and features some excellent keyboard embellishments from Jobson. "Thirty Years" has interesting lyrics and features a fantastic section of drumming by Bruford that exhibits his uncanny sense of timing and control. Allan Holdsworth shines on side two. 'Time To Kill," which features both his facile acoustic guitar work and some fiery electric playing might make even Al Dimeola sit up and take notice. U.K.'s debut album is an excellent example of how big-name musicians can work on a project together and keep their personal one-upmanship. The result is some breathtaking music. Buff V1 gterte SGSiffiito Mestts rUI You can't anticipate a broken leg, mono or appendicitis. Al though you hope they don t happen, it makes good sense to be prepared for the expenses that accompany sickness and accidents, just in case. One of the best ways to protect yourself against the sud den and unexpected expenses of a sickness or accident is with the University of Nebraska's Student Health Insurance Program. Here are five important reasons why: (1) Advanced Protection The University of Nebraska's Student Health Insurance Program offers you the increased benefits you need to help pay for today's improved but more expensive medi cal care. Provides hospital-surgical-medical protection for covered sickness and accidents. Pays these benefits in addition to any other protection you may have. (2) Broad Coverage Your University plan can help you pay for medical services not available at your Student Health Center, and, in some instances, can even pay for the services provided by the Center. (3) Lower Cost Your University of Nebraska program is available to indi vidual students, and to married students, their spouses and children at costs considerably below what similar protection would cost if purchased on an individual basis. (4) Year Round Protection Your University's plan provides protection for the entire year including those periods when you are away from school at home or on vacation. (5) Leading Company This program is underwritten by Mutual of Omaha, a leading company in the individual and family health insurance field. A company that is a leader in providing protection to students at many schools throughout the country. For full details on this important protection, contact John Van Bloom & Associates today.
