And this September is no different as UNL senior Guylyn Remmenga attempts to break a monopoly against Nebraska Saturday night at the 58th annual Miss America Pageant. Bidding to become the first Miss Neb raska to be personally serenaded by Bert Parks, the 21 -year-old Elwood native re ported Wednesday that all was going well at this year's pageant despite a harried schedule. Since arriving Saturday afternoon, Remmenga said she and the 49 other contestants have been kept busy shuffling in and out of press conferences, shuttling back and forth between rehearsals and shedding swimsuits for casual wear and for mal gowns. Classical pianist Formally trained as a classical pianist, Remmenga has fought free from the hectic pace, careful organization and constant chaperones whenever possible to squeeze in some practice time on the ivories. She will perform two classical pieces at the Saturday night final which will be telecast live on NBC at 8 p.m. Wednesday afternoon the broadcasting and advertising major said she had just completed the personal interview part of the contest. Remmenga said eight judges personally interview each contestant, evaluating their intelligence and poise under controlled questioning. Questions alternated between light and serious, revolving around functions of the press, censorship, her assets, handicaps and how she got her name. Asset is optimism Her biggest asset? "My optimism toward life." Handicap? "Always wanting to do things in a hurry and ending up not doing them right." Guylyn? "My maternal grandfather desperately wanted a boy, but he was 0-for-three when I came along, so I guess my parents com promised." She said the Miss America Pageant does not force her to compromise her views on women's liberation because "I'm not a pro-women's libber to begin with. "I'm an individual who's all for libera tion of the individual. Everyone should be free to do what they want with their life. This pageant has given me a lot of scholar ship money and opened a lot of doors for me." Summer job in Hollywood One door that recently opened for Remmenga is the world of modeling and screenwriting. Se spent part of the summer in Hollywood working for a Columbia Studios producer. Remmenger said she fell in love with California and is looking into the possibili ty of moving there after graduation. Al though acting now holds little appeal for her, she said, the chance to model or delve into TV production and writing does. To that end, she said she will stop in Provo, Utah, for three days after the At lantic City festivities end Sunday. There is a regional film conference there that Robert Red ford and Katherine Ross will attend. Remmenga said she was able to attend through an invitation lined up by the Columbia Studios producer, a summer job, sh added, that has a lot of future possibili ties. "But one thing I won't do is leave Nebraska before I give up my title sometime next June or July," said Remmenga. Police estimate UNL carpool will draw 600-700 people Like other American institutions, UNL is using the carpool system, according to Captain Ken Markle of University Police. Markle estimates that between 600 and 700 people will use the university's carpool system this year. Markle said University Police are working in conjunction with the Lincoln Carpool Agency. "We are trying to arrange carpools with city workers and university members," Markle said. Currently, a dozen people have con tacted University Police about carpools. Markle expects an increase after posters are put up on campus, next week. He explained that the University Police did not have time to work on the carpool system the first week of school because they were too busy selling parking permits. After contacting University police, applicants for the carpools fill out a form giving the time of desired arrival and departure on campus. The form is then put through the city's computer to match up carpoolers, according to Markle. "There are more local carpools than there are outstate (commuters)," Markle said. "Savings and being matched up free are the benefits of carpooling at the university." Special university parking permits are available at S35 for the first car and $5 for each additional car. r Sunday Late Night Special $11 00 u a Reg. 12" Pizza items & 2 COKES SAVE ONLY $4. tax incl. vnTrt 'feefc free dz?!hmrv VALID AFTER 8 P.M.
