Reading course speeds at UNL Although speed reading recently has come into vogue with the advent of certain commercial classes being offered around the country, the UNL speed reading pro gram has been in existence since the end of World War II. At that time, the federal government gave money to universities to start speed reading classes and UNL was one ot the recipients. Kay Felton, who has been teaching the course for eight years, said she believes there is a basic need for this type of class. She expects a "relatively good" turnout, and said that she thought more students would take the class if they received credit for it. Hie course is not at all like the Evelyn Wood speed reading program, she said, which "emphasizes astronomi cal speeds like 4,000 words per minute, which is not truly reading." The UNL course emphasizes comprehension, study skills, and vocabulary improvement. Students are taught, for example, how to read a textbook, how to take notes, and how to study effectively. The course also can give students a "shortcut method to save time, and write a term paper in a well -organized manner Although the registration for the course officially closed September 5, she said there might be room for more students. The next session starts on October 23.
