AUF, ASUN will finance
campus activities, charities
UNL students will have the final say
in deciding what activities and charities
receive money from the fall campus
fund drive, which is sponsored by
ASUN and the All University Fund,
according to the president of AUF.
Pam George said a ballot will be
printed in the next few weeks to be
distributed to Greek houses and
residence halls. The ballot will list six
charities and seven campus activities to
be considered for funding. Students will
then select three charities and three
activities.
The seven campus activities under
consideration are a rape crisis line,
hiring student employees for the sports
complex to keep the complex open
longer, a typing lounge, a new black
student orientation program, a child
care program, grants for student re
search projects, and political and ideo
logical speakers which had been cut
from the student fee budget last year.
The money raised during the drive
will be split evenly between the off
campus charities and the on-campus act
ivities, George said.
Along with the money raised by
ASUN and AUF, the University of Neb
raska Foundation plans to match the
money set aside for the on-campus
projects. Outside sources, including
alumni and businessman, will be the
target of the UN Foundation's fund
raising, she said.
"The University of Nebraska Found
ation cannot support charities off
campus," George said. "We can do both,
if we choose."
A student foundation will be organ
ized, made up of students who will regu
late the money raised in the fund drive.
Limits on costs for the activities and
charities will be set. Should the money
raised exceed these limits, the overflow
would probably go into a student
foundation budget to be used in future
years, although nothing definite about
excess money has been decided, George
said.
Money-raising activities will include
some that AUF has been sponsoring for
the past several years plus some new
ones.
"AUF is going to do Plantasia as
usual," George said. Dances, pizza
parties, and activities in Greek houses
are among the possibilities.
UNL not affected by
food stamp decision
A recent Department of Agriculture decision to allow a
University of Michigan dental student to claim dental
equipment and fees as household expenses will not yet
affect UNL students, said Cliff Osborn of the State Food
Stamp Program.
"In the past this (listing fees and equipment as house
hold expenses) has not been allowed", Osborn said.
Currently, in Lancaster Count, students can deduct
certain amounts of their tuition and regular fees on a
monthly basis when applying for food stamps, according
to the supervisor of the Lancaster County Food Stamp
Program, Michelle Buresh.
Any loans held by the student would be prorated on
the application as income, Buresh said, but, she added
there are no provisions yet to deduct equipment or other
fees.
Students who are claimed as tax deductions by their
parents are ineligble to apply Tor food stamps, Buresh
said, and students who are sharing an apartment may be
eligible depending on the type of living arrangement they
have made.
If students pool all of their money to pay expenses,
then they are considered economic units just as if they
were a family, she said.
But, if each student in the apartment pays a certain
share of the expenses, then each student has to be indiv
idually considered in applying for food stamps, Buresh
added.
Each person eligible for food stamps receives $54
worth of coupons no matter what the person's income is,
but, depending on his income, the person may be required
to pay up to $44 for the stamps, she said.
