If you've ever been curious about how you learn, dis
couraged by traditional class structure or mystified by a
new teaching method, a class offered by the University
Studies department may be for you.
University Studies 100, Learning Analysis is a three
credit, pass-fail course. It was designed to help students
understand their own style of learning and their reactions
to different teaching methods, according to Royce
Ronning, course coordinator.
"We want to make students better consumers of their
own education and make more rational decisions about
choosing their classes" he said.
Ronning said the course is taught by four instructors
and will expose students to different learning methods.
Ronning teaches the first segment and said it would
give students a brief introduction to human learning and
provide them with a sense of how they learn.
The second segment will be taught by William Seiler
from the speech and communications department. It
explores games and simulations as a form of teaching.
These techniques emphasize learning through partici
pation. Students will use structured games and simula
tions to help each other learn to communicate and to
develop their style of learning.
the third segment will be taught by Dan Bernstein,
of the Psychology department and uses the Keller Plan.
This learning method is essentially self-taught and allows
students to progress at their own rate. The material
covered will include personal motivation and the condi
tions which influence each individual's performance.
The fourth segment will be taught by English Pro
fessor Roger Welsch. Welsch will lecture on Nebraska
folklore and explore the lecture as a teaching form,
medium.
At the end of the semester students will evaluate each
teaching method, Ronning said.
Gene Trani, assistant vice president of academic affairs
said the program is partially financed through a federal
grant. He said similar courses are offered at UNO, Kearney
State College, Chadron State College, Doane College and
the College of Saint Mary's.
