Wed., and Friday 9-6 Monday and Thursday 9-8:30 Saturday 9-5 A fire ignited in the Cather-Pound Resi dence Hall food service area last Friday, interrupting the evening meal and causing about $400 worth of damage, according to University Police. Captain Robert Edmunds of Univer sity Police said the fire occured at 5:55 p.m. in the basement maintenance area of Cather-Pound food service. The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but, according to police it appeared to be connected with a large radial saw which was stored in the area. "The place was unoccupied," said Edmunds, "so the fire must have smold ered after the maintenance workers left." Firemen extinguished the fire before any extensive damage was done. However, the radial saw, which was worth an estimated $400, was a total loss, Edmunds reported. An automatic alarm summoned firemen, which went off as soon as smoke was detected. Some students believed the alarm to be a signal for a fire drill at first because there was no sign of smoke until firemen opened the door to the food ser vice area and smoke poured out. "We thought it was just a false alarm," one student remarked. "We started to just stay in the cafeteria and finish eating." The fire was contained in the food service area, therefore there was no need to evacuate the building, Edmunds explained. Fire Department Chief Deputy Dennis Hohbein reported no injures in the fire. Although flammable objects such as a cardboard box of waste paper stood by, the fire was contained. Students did not panic, because most were uncertain whether a fire had occurred. "The fire was definitely unintentional," Hohbein said. "It was just one of those accidents."
