Parking lot 20
to open this week
The 300 parking spaces closed during the resurfacing of
lot 20, north of the Dental College, should be available
again at the end of this week.
Capt. Kenneth Markle, of University Police, said the
blacktopping of the rock parking lot should have begun in
May, but was delayed until two weeks ago.
Harley Schrader, director of the Physical Plant, said the
late start shouldn't cause any parking problems because
there are plenty of extra lots. A check into funds available
for the project and the contractor's schedule were the
main reasons for the postponement. Designing of the lot
also takes time, Schrader said.
Students have been asked to temporarily park in area
25 by Baker Hall and orfthe Campus Loop.
Markle said the Parking Advisory Department
recommends which lcjts need repair and the chancellor of
business and finance approves the decision. The price of
resurfacing the lot is not yet known, but UNL is paying
$20 a ton for blacktop, Schrader said.
Other lots to be resurfaced this fall are those adjacent
to the Plant-Science Lab and the lot on 18th and Q
Streets. A lot on 21st and Vine streets will be rocked this
fall instead of resurfaced.
UNL dismisses
While students enjoy a four-day weekend this
Labor Day, university office employees will have
only three days for vacation. All university offices
will be open Tuesday. Football tickets will be
available to those who purchased them last spring
Tuesday through Friday. Pick-up for lottery tickets
will be Wednesday.
University receives
government grant
UNL will receive about $165,000 from the federal
government.
Most of the sum, $89,719, will be given to UNL by the
U.S. Office of Education to provide special services to
disadvantaged students who are economically disadvant
aged, educationally deprived or culturally different.
UNL estimates there are 6,800 such students now on
campus, and hopes to reach 200-400 of them this year
with career planning help and academic skill instruction
The Environmental Protection Agency will give
$21,000 .to the UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural
Resources. The money will enable the institute to make'
available, on computer terminals at the agricultural
extension service offices and state offices, information
about which pesticides have been approved by the EPA
for special use. It also will pay for a survey of pesticide
use in rural and urban areas.
An extra $55,700 has been granted to James A
Sampson, by the National Science Foundation. Sampson,
a professor with the UNL physics department, will invest
igate the interreaction between solar radiation with plan
etary atmospheres.
Engineering teacher
given science grant
The National Science Foundation has granted Professor
Pau -Chang Lu of UNL mechanical engineering department
$1 8,544 for thermal energy research.
Lu said thermal energy is a major feasible source of
energy that has been used throughout history.
"The grant will be used to study numerically the tem
perature in porous material when the mass rate is being
changed," said Lu. "The study will help in the design of
various apparatus to store and convert thermal energy,"
he added.
Lu plans to stay on the UNL campus and continue to
teach while conducting the 1 2-month study.
The grant provides money for a graduate assistant,
according to Lu.
