friday, September 1, 1978 daily nebraskan page 5 oped Religion causes couple to close doors and fight devil By John Lochmiller I was sent as a reporter to interview an elderly couple for a simple human interest story. The following observations, I believe, represent not them so much as their type. This couple has chosen to live in a monastic life-style because of their religious beliefs. This is in no way meant to be a blow to organized religion or to anyone's personal beliefs, it is only an opinion and an observation. There is a certain Mr. L. and a certain Mrs. L. living among us who are in no way the superficial tragedy of old age and disease, and it acts as a persuasive veneer, an aegis to ward off the sharp rebuttal and leave in its place a sad shaking of the head. But to condone the behavior of such persons allows their faults to be considered acceptable, and their beliefs to be consider ed normal and even desirable. Mr. and Mrs. L have spent their lives in Nebraska, first as farmers on rented land and then as workers in Lincoln until retire ment. Their life now revolves around the evangelical world of hope and dreams es poused by His luminaries on Earth, such as Billy Graham. remarkable, in fact, a description of them would be entirely normal, for who could call a life normal unless it was tinged with a modicum of tragedy. 'Poor' donate thousands OPIrllOn Even though this simple couple has existed for years in near poverty, they have found it possible to donate thousands of dollars to missionaries in order to stop Satan and communism around the world. As a matter of fact, Mr. and Mrs. L. are convinced there are a large number of communists and devils in city and federal government. Age a shield In the case of Mr. and Mrs. L. there is Abortion, birth control, and etters In regards to the caption under the pic ture of the Farm House -Alpha Chi Omega Watermelon Feed which appeared in Wednesday's paper, one must remember one important thing: The men of the Phi Delta Theta had nothing to do with this event. It is really very easy to differentiate between Farm House and Phi Delt men in terms oT food: the former give it away in the form of watermelon while the latter do so by pouring beer over the head of the advisor for fraternities, sororities, and cooperatives from their roof. We hope that in the future, your reporters will seek out valid sources of information when cover ing news events. Contradiction So finally, after years of studying a philosophy of love, there exist two people vhose hearts are full of hate and whose eyes are full of the bright light of fanatic ism. One may only assume from this that the road to paradise is littered with the excess burdens of reason and finally sanity. One may only believe what one sees and hears, and when one sees ahd hears joy springing from an outpouring of hate, one may only conclude that to be saved one must first be destroyed.
