New office replaces
Student Activities
Following the recommendations of a 10-member task
force, a new office of Campus Activities and Programs
(CAP) has replaced the Student Activities office.
Sara Boatman, associate director of the Nebraska
Union and CAP director, said the CAP office opened in
mid-July.
At this time last year, the Student Activities Office and
Union Program Council were separate organizations. They
were combined in December, she said. The task force then
began looking at the specific needs of groups and student
activities on campus, and formed the present CAP
structure.
Boatman said CAP's main purpose is to provide
assistance to students and over 200 organizations on both
campuses. CAP also is responsible for registering all events
and advising any organization on campus, she said.
Another service offered by CAP is the Volunteer
Clearinghouse, Boatman said. The clearinghouse is a
referral service and counseling center for students inter
ested in voluntary community service, and has over 250
placements listed in Lincoln.
Boatman said one of the most important aspects of the
new CAP structure is that almost all services offered on
city campus are now available from CAP in the Nebraska
East Union student affairs office.
Also, the new structure of CAP will save student fee
money which can be used for new and expanded pro
grams, she said.
"Operating on basically the same amount of money as
in the past, and using money more efficiently and combin
ing services, we can expand our programs," she said.
