thursday, august 31, 1978 daily nebraskan page 7 Computer card era will end soon By Scott Nelson The registration process used by UNL today is essen tially the same as it was 20 years ago, according to the dir ector of Registration and Records. Ted Pfeifer said there have been a few changes, such as early registration and time appointment cards, but regis tration still b based on using a computer card per class space. The system that registered 8,356 students in 1958 will register more than 23,000 students this fall, and while Pfeifer called it an "old but workable system," he ad mitted it has some shortcomings. He said one problem is that the cards change hands many times and it takes three to four weeks from the time a student alters his class chedule until all the records are changed. "That time lag can create a lot of errors and confu sion," he said. Hopefully well be able to get rid of those damn little cards. Pfeifer said that his department is involved in the de velopment of a totally new student information system that will eliminate computer cards. The effort is called the Student Information System (SIS) Project and involves UNL, UNO and the Univer sity of Nebraska Medical Center. Bob Reed, coordinator of the project, said it wift greatly speed up registration for students and eliminate i am yr ! . stock WHOM1 AT BOTH UNIONS! "Since the records would be updated immediately, we could pick up dropped spaces immediately and get more accurate information to department chairmen and instructors," Reed said. The first stage of the project should be completed by January 1980 and involves the writing of the class schedule for second semester of that year, he said. The class schedule will not be visibly different and students should not expect to see any changes until after 1980, he added.
