Sheldon develops film coopeerative
In its sixth year, the Sheldon Film Theater is flourish.
ing, according to its director Dan Ladely. Besides the
varied film exhibition program, this year Sheldon will
feature a film equipment cooperative and a film research
library.
"The equipment cooperative exists to provide a means
of production to anyone in the community involved in
film-making, sound, and video work," Ladely said. "As
originally conceived and now operating, the co-op is a
resource of equipment, information, and skills to be
shared equally by all interested persons."
The research library consists of files on film-makers,
directors, critics, and actors containing reviews and notes,
catalogues from distributors throughout the U.S., periodi
cals, and books. The materials in the library are open to
anyone involved in film scholarship or anyone interested
in locating a film to rent.
Exciting as ever
The Autumn-Winter 1978 Film-makers' Showcase is
"going to be as exciting as ever" Ladely said, with visits
by film-makers, Susan Makavejev and Mary Beams.
Makavejev who is travelling from Yugoslavia to make a
personal appearance at Sheldon, is a highly controversial,
often considered revolutionary film-maker, whose films
are among Ladely's personal favorites.
"For those who are open-minded and unrepressed,
watching his films will be an enlightening and liberating
experience," said Ladely. "The rest of you might as weU
stay home."
"Mary Beams is a highly skilled animator, some of
whose films have been shown at Sheldon previously, "
notes Ladely. "With fine white lines on dark backgrounds,
Beams' films are models of aesthetic ecology: the
maximum of expression through what -appears to be a
minimum of means.
Educational values
"I have always placed a great deal of emphasis upon
showing good documentary films because of their
educational and entertainment values," says Ladely.
The documentary program begins September 7 through
9, with two films by Colorado film-maker Sally Barrett
Page; Like a Rose, "...a probing and insistent analysis of
the concrete conditions of existence at a women's
prison ..." and A in 't Nobody 's Business But My Own ,
which Ladely calls "a fascinating and extremely well-made
color documentary that shows the everyday, behind-the-scenes
lives of female prostitutes."
Following these on September 14 is a film which
Ladely terms as a "must" for anyone interested in ballet,
The Children of Theatre Street , which reveals the heart of
one of the most famous and influential ballet schools in
the world, the Vaganova Choreographic Institute located
in Leningrad, U.S.S.R.
Cuban cinema
"The Cuban Cinema is quickly becoming recognized as
being one of the most vital and impressive national cine
mas in the world. "We have two fine examples of their
documentary work to see this fall; Victory of Hope and
The Spear of a Nation, both explaining, from a Cuban
point-of-view, that country's intervention in Africa."
Also coming up at the Sheldon Film Theater; Street
Corner Stories, which presents the street corner conver
sations and storytelling of working class black men, and
Black At Yale, which probes the complex condition of

Obie winner
Short Eyes is a highly dramatic and emotionally
packed story of life in a New York City jaii. Miguel Pinero
wrote the play, which won two Obies and the New York
Drama Critics' award in 1973-74, in Sing Sing, where he
was serving a five-year sentence for robbery and con
sequently became the first Puerto Rican to gain a wide
spread reputation as a playwright. Last Chants For A Slow
Dance (Deadend), by Jon Jost, is a road picture in the
tradition of the American road picture genre and promises
to be one of the highlights of the autumn-winter season.
The Nebraska Union Program Council film committees
have come up with a selection of films. Some of the high
lights, according to Ladely, are Padre, Padrone, Fos
binder's latest, Effi Briest, the controversial and lengthy
Bertolucci film, 1900, and a new film by Satyajit Ray,
The Middle Man.
