Journalism School to know
by Jan. 1 if it will be college
A decision on whether or not tn mak
the UNL School of Journalism a separate
college should be made by before Jan. 1,
according to Ned Hedges, UNL vice
chancellor for academic affairs.
Hedges said the decision on the request
made by the school last spring should be
made before an accreditation review of the
school to be conducted next spring.
He said that he and UNL Chancellor
Roy Young have not yet decided to ap
point a study committee or what its
makeup will be.
The request for separate standing was
made to keep pace with other journalism
schools and improve journalsim educa
tion, according to R. Neale Copple, direc
tor of the School of Journalism.
Would work better
"Many of the Schools of Journalism of
our kind are independent or free standing,"
Copple said.
"It would work better for a variety of
reasons, we are a little different than all
the other units of Arts and Sciences."
Hedges said the decision would be based
on "what is best for students and best for
the school as an academic institution."
He said budgetary questions and pro
fessional relationships would also play a
part in the decision.
Copple said he did not believe the
change would lead to an increase in the
journalism school budget.
But, he said, journalism school costs
probably would have to increase due to the
steady increase in enrollment in the school.
On a related matter, Copple said he is
continuing to raise funds to install a
video display terminal system at the
school.
VDT's in wide use
He said about $85,000 had been raised
with a possible goal of $200,000.
Copple said a small VDT system con
sisting of about 7 terminals is available for
$50,000, but these systems are not capable
of expanding the number of terminals.
He said the larger amount would permit
the purchase of a larger, more flexible
system.
VDT's are being used in newsrooms
across the country for reporting, editing,
and typesetting.
Rather than using typewriter and paper,
the VDT's allow reporters stories to be
written into the system and appear on a
screen before him. The copy is then
available for editors and typesetters to
work with through the touch of a button.

Noteboom resigns
from health center
An effort to reorganize the leadership of the Univer
sity Health Cetner has been upset with the resignation of
Kenneth Noteboom, health center administrator.
Noteboom, who will leave the health center Sept. 20,
had been the central figure in a plan by UNL vice chancel
lor for student affairs, Richard Armstrong, to organize
the health center administration between the health
center administrator and the chief of staff, Dr. Garland
Bare.
Dr. Kenneth Hubble, former director of the health
center retired this summer.
Armstrong said he had been planning to study the ef
fectiveness of the administrator-chief of staff team
through the fall semester, but he explained that he now is
unsure whether to replace Noteboom with another admin
istrator or to fill the director position.
Despite the administrative problems at the health
center, the center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. The health
center staff asks students to make an appointment for
non -emergency health situations.
Students registered for at least four credit hours a
semester are eligible for health center services.
Before the books,
improve the looks.
