Wednesday, august 23, 1978 daily nebraskan page 17 Consumer tips So you liked the dress in the shop, but at home the color looks like spoiled tuna? The shoes are not as comfortable at home as on three inches of carpet in the store; so what can you do about it? It depends. Each store has individual return policies. It is best to ask about the return policy before making a purchase. Most stores use three basic poli cies. The first is the even exchange. One item is exchanged for another of the same value. This privilege is usually used when the buyer has made a mistake, like buying the wrong color. The return for credit policy usually means the consumer is given a credit slip or his account is credi ted with the amount originally paid. The consumer may then apply the credit to any item in the store. This is a more liberal method of return. Under the third policy, the con sumer gets a cash refund. This method of returning money is a way of insuring" the customer that he will get satisfaction when dealing with the particular store. Most stores use these policies, but all do so voluntarily, and not because they are compelled by law to do so. It is a privilege they extend to their customers. N. Y. revival, This is your Life-style' By E.K. Casaccio Editor's note: Associate News Editor E.K. Casaccio spent the summer in New York City on an American Society of Magazine Editors internship. Anyone planning a trip to New York City within the next five years, take note. ;Along with toothbrush, deodorant and con traceptive, don't forget to pack your Life style. You don't need money to have a Life style. It's cheap, even in the land of $450-a-month one-bedroom closets. You need only be totally insecure, habitually boring, easy prey to peer pressure and feel the need to present the manner in which you brush your teeth as unique in the modern world. This is interesting? No, but people are eager to know about your Lifestyle so they can relate to it, get into it, on top of it, and probably copy it. Lifestyles in New York, as elsewhere, are surprisingly similar. The New York prototype includes: -living in a renovated brownstone; -playing tennis (squash, racquet ball and handball also qualify); -dining out more than in; -vacationing in London and Paris; -weekending in Boston and D.C.; -drinking only Perrier, a carbonated mineral water from France; And finally, that Lifestyle within a Life style which has attained status as a national religion -jogging. Visits to the pedicurist or local podiatrist have replaced the psychia trist as the ultimate in chic. Books promote it, people pant about it, and those retired runners are back in parks or on pavement rejoicing in being "Rerun." While all of these may not apply to Ne braskans, those with Lifestyles leave recog nizable tracks. They usually travel in flocks and tend to nip at each other when the field gets crowded. Often, too often, they whine triumphantly that they "did it before it was fashionable." it' meaning anyone of a number of foul habits. And the word "no" has gone the way of the go-go-boot in this crowd. It has been replaced instead with, "That doesn't fit in with my Lifestyle." This negative response is most oft repeated in answer to the ques tion, "Do you breathe without being coached?" You may not be able to avoid those with Lifestyles, but you can prevent your own demise as a self-motivated human being. How to be spared from attaining a Lifestyle: -torch your Jackson Browne albums; -wear a blank T-shirt; -at only those foods containing sus pected carcinogens; -tell no one about your first sexual experience; on the subject of disco music declare that you love to listen to it, but hate to dance to it; -tell everyone you want to get married and have children. If this is too drastic, just refrain from using the word "I". One can hardly define one's Lifestyle without it.
