Summer Nebraskan, Thursday, July 20, 1978 Page 3 Suicides by college students studied in NETV documentary University News Briefs Parking lot repairs Residency program Due to the cement shortage, repairs on University parking lots are slightly behind schedule, according to Kenneth Markle, UN-L police captain in charge of parking and traffic. Markle said, however, that repairs to hard surface entrances to lots will be completed by fall. Markle said parking stickers for the fall will not change in price ($35) from last year. Conference July 25 A one-day conference for teachers, administrators and supervisors will be July 25 at McPhee School Auditorium. Billy R. Reagan, general superintendent of schools in Houston, Texas will speak on "A Superintendent's Thoughts about Curriculum." Jazz Concert The Neoclassic Jazz Orchestra, whose members are from southeast Nebraska, will perform a two hour concert at the Lincoln Community Playhouse July 21. The concert, Neoclassic Jazz Orchestra Live from London, is so named because the group is the U.S. representative to the International Festival of the Arts and will perform the same concert in Loncon next month. Proceeds from the Lincoln concert will go to finance the tour to England and Scotland. The group will present 13 major concerts there Aug. 3 to 25. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $4 and can be purchased at the nlavhrnise. Students interested in drug abuse research can apply for a 90-day residency program near Washington, D.C. Anyone pursuing a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree in a drug abuse field can apply for the residency at the National Drug Abuse Center (NDAC), according to Linda McNaught of the Nebraska Drug Abuse Commis sion. McNaught said the summer residency program is in progress but applications for the fall and winter sessions are being taken now. Applications are available at the Nebraska Drug Abuse Commission on the third floor of the State Office Building. Degree deadline The last day to file applications for degrees for the Aug. 18 graduation is July 21. Applications must be turned in at room 208, Administration Building. ASUN meeting ASUN will meet July 22 and discus sion will include plans for a student credit union, a student fund drive and the migration game to Boulder, Colo. The group will meet in the Nebraska Union at 4 p.m. The meeting room will be posted. The growing number of suicides by college students will be studied in a documentary program on the Nebraska Educational Television Network, July 24. "College can be Killing," a one-hour program beginning at 7 p.m., looks at how universities and colleges deal with student stress, anxiety and potential suicide. The program visits two university campuses. An analysis of Northwestern University examines factors that could contribute to student depression, includ ing single-room housing, untrained instructors and residence hall assistants and keen academic competition. In contrast the program indicates that the University of Wisconsin offers programs to help students deal with anxieties, tensions and loneliness and the school actively promotes its clinical services. Students and staff are taught to recognize a student in need of special attention. The program urges parents to investigate a school's emotional support before deciding which school their child should attend. Rec. dept. sponsors Backpacking trip The UN-L recreation de partment is sponsoring a backpacking trip to Tar ghee National Forest, Wyo. in August. The group will be pack ing in rough wilderness terrain at an altitude of 9,000-10,000 feet during the trip. Three pre-trip meetings are required before the group leaves Aug. 18. The schedule is as fol lows: Arrive Driggs, Idaho at 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 19. Stay at National Outdoor Leadership School Cabin night of Aug. 19. Enter Targhee for Lin coln night of Aug. 26 & arrive in Lincoln Aug. 27. The cost of the trip is $115 which includes food, transportation, insurance and equipment.
