This 1954 action packed Japanese production directed by Akira Kurosawa, was almost three years in the making. The story takes place in the 16th century and depicts the hostility between Samurai warriors and peasants they have been hired to protect from roving bandits. The final battle in a driving rainstorm has been described by critics as even more moving than it is exciting as each character has become thoroughly indi vidualized and each death is felt personally by the audience.
