Playhouse presents 'beastly' musical
The Playhouse will present a 60-minute children's
musical based on the story, "Beauty and the Beast " The
play will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday at
7:30 p.m. with additional matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday
and Sunday. '
Lenette Nelson, Playhouse Children's Theater director
said the play has villains, beasts, leopards, panthers and
lots of action.
The play concerns Master Mariner and his family -Beauth,
Rotundra and the servant Timothy.
The family is shipwrecked and faces financial disaster
when the mortgage holder on their house, Lord Love
adime, and his pet, Freely Ferocious, threaten to seize all
their possessions as collateral. Lord Loveadime tells them
they must pay the mortgage or else give him Beauty.
Master Mariner seeks help for the family but while on
his trip, he pricks a rose at the Beast's enchanted castle.
That is an act punishable by death, according to the Beast,
but the Panther bargains with him so that Beauty is held
The script for Beauty and the Beast was written by
Juanese and Wesley Van Tassel. Mark Ollington wrote the
music and lyrics.
The cast includes Steve Fagerberg as Timothy, Kristin
Auer as Beauty, Belinda Acosta as Rotundra, Scott
Dorsey as Master Mariner, David Boughn as Lord Lovea
dime, Shelly Boehmer as Freely Ferocious, Paul Eschli
man as the Beast and Mary Pat Ellis as Midnight the
Panther.
Rita Vermuelen is musical director; Paul Davie is
choreographer. Technicians are Art Kuhr (technical
director), Ginny Dzerk (costume designer). Nan Hannon
(light operator), Marie Muffley (make-up designer) and
Katie Johnson (props manager). Rob Fisher is stage man
ager and Kathy Tejcka is pianist.
The musical will be presented in the Playhouse Gallery
Theater. Seating for children will be on the floor but
chairs will be available for adults. For ticket reservations
and information, call the Playhouse box office, 489-9608.
Tickets are $1 for students and $1.50 for adults.
University orchestra to perform tonight
The favorable reception received by the UNL Uni
versity Orchestra's April 6 concert has resulted in the pre
sentation of a repeat performance tonight at 8 in Kimball
Recital Hall. The UNL-School of Music has scheduled this
special performance in response to an invitation from the
Chancellor's office to provide an evening of music for
the Chancellor's Club.
The concert is open to the public. Admission is free.
The orchestra has been supplemented by graduate stu
dents from all over the nation and is comparable to a full
symphonic group with a high degree of maturity in
orchestral playing, according to David Fowler, vice
director of the UNL School of Music.
Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, opus 95 in E minor (New
World Symphony) and Poulenc's Concerto in G minor for
Organ, String Orchestra and Timpani will be the featured
selections. Organ soloist for the concerto will be senior
Nancy Peck. Conductor for the orchestra is Robert Emile.
