German officer . . .
Continued from page 1
The Reidis Arbeitisdienst
was an activity that "prac
tically everyone had to join
including girls," he said.
Units of people were
organized and taught drills
using spades instead of
rifles.
"We used the spades to
dig defense trenches. Then
we'd have to clean the
spades just like with rifles,"
he said.
Schneider described his
personal thoughts of Hitler's
regime. ,
"In the first couple of
years - 1933 through
1934 - it looked like things
would be better for Ger
many," Schneider said.
"The unemployed were em
ployed . . . Things got better
after the depression.
"The first years, people
didn't feel the Nazis."
At the beginning of the
war, Schneider said his
father forbade him to listen
to English radio for fear he
would repeat what he had
heard.
"No one trusted anyone
else," he said. "If someone
said something damaging
about the Nazi party, it
could hurt the whole fami
ly." Schneider said most Ger
mans were not aware of
what actually was happen
ing in the war.
"Eventually the Jews dis
appeared. We were told they
were shipped off to some

other country. There were
people who lived five miles
from concentration camps
and didn't even know it,"
he said.
During the war Schneid
er was wounded and taken
as an American prisoner of
war to Darmstadt, Ger
many. Soldiers in his unit tried
to be taken prisoner by the
Americans rather than the
Russians, he said. "Most of
us would not have surrend
ered to the Russians. We
couldn't have survived Rus
sian camps."
After Schneider's release
from the American prison
camp, he pursued his edu
cation at the University of
Munster and Tubingen. In
1954, he earned his doctrate
in mathematical logic.
However, Schneider said
he was unhappy with his
advancement in the adminis
tration at the University of
Munster. A former UNL
faculty member in the math
department met Schneider,
he said, and asked him to
come to the university to
teach.
In 1957, Schneider
boarded a ship and came to
the United States.
Besides instructing math
ematical logic classes,
Schneider also heads a pro
gram offering degrees in
math for teachers.
He has spent four
months in Assan, India, as a
mathematical consultant for
the National Science Foun
dation .
Despite his travels,
Schneider said the United
States is like any other
country.
"If you live long enough
in it, you learn to like it,"
he said.
