Initially, I thought that National Blue
Jeans Day was a ridiculous political-suicide
move initiated by some naive leaders in the
gay movement. But now I am painfully
aware of the impact that NBJDhad.
If nothing else, last Friday made me
aware of the stupidity and bigotry of many
"straight" people on this campus. It is too
bad that the people writing the anti-gay ads
in the personals thought they were showing
their cleverness. They were actually dis
playing their moronic tendencies.
And it is terribly pathetic that the
Greeks of Phi Kappa Psi (with their sign of
15 reasons not to be gay) thought they
were only showing the public how insecure
and uneducated they are.
Worse yet, people like Geraldo Rivera
and Anne Federson (Letters, Mon., April
17) have to clarify to the pifblic that they
are heterosexual while defending homosex
uals. It is this kind of fear that forces peo
ple to remain anonymous.
I like to say th5t I am proud to be going
to school with gay women and men who
have acted admirably in the face of hatred
and danger, just as I am ashamed of the
"fag-fighters" on our campus.
Judging from the bigotry of many
"straights" at UNL, it is obvious that this
university is not doing a good enough job
of educating its students.

Daily Nebraskan salesman
wins national sales award
The Daily Nebraskan advertising staff
won three national awards at the Col
lege Newspapers Business and Advertis
ing Managers convention in Chicago last
weekend.
Becky Beadell, a senior advertising
major from Lincoln, was named the na
tional Distinguished Sales Representa
tive at the convention. She expressed
surprise at winning the award. "I had
myself psyched out," Beadell said. "I
though the winner would be some guy
who had sold millions. I had no idea at
all I would win."
Beadell has been a member of the
Daily Nebraskan advertising department
for three semesters.
The Daily Nebraskan's "Fashion 78"
supplement published March 29 was
awarded the national Best Special Edi
tion award out of 40 nationwide entries.
Gregg Wurdemann, Daily Nebraskan
advertising manager, said the award is "a
great honor for us because we were
competing against much larger schools.
We beat them on quality."
Wurdemann is senior advertising ma
jar from Omaha.
The Daily Nebraskan also received a
first runner-up in the best individual ad
vertisement competition.
