thursday, april 13, 1978 daily nebraskan page 5 I would like to commend the Daily Nebraskan on its coverage of the first abortion debate April 2.1 was at the debate and found it well done. One point not mentioned was the poll taken of the audience at the end of the de bate: 75 pro-life, 24 pro-abortion, 1 no opinion. Glenda Lanik Sophomore, English Major Sex objects I'd like to express my disappointment over the Ralph cartoon which appeared in the Thursday, April 6 Daily Nebraskan. The sort of humor which portrays women as sex objects for the enjoyment of men is in poor taste. I find is especially repulsive when it appears in a college newspaper. Joanne Stohs Human development and the family, graduate student Free thinking Government, money and the power to take and spend it without restriction do not mix. For the same reason that chimpanzees are not handed loaded guns to. play with, money should not be freely given to government. It is morally wrong to take money from people to sup port any group not under the influence of the voting pub lic; that is, a group whose funding is not at the discretion of the money earners. A second, and much more subtle, point is this: nothing except the vote, an individual expression of opinion, can represent the public interest. I JL o th editor If the vote, however, is to represent the individual, a certain amount of fact evaluation and free thought (which require effort) is necessary before responsible political be havior can ensue. How many of us realize that such mental freedom and opinion formation is obsolete (or rather, outlawed under penalty of death) in many countries throughout the world? A more sobering fact is this: the American public is be coming mentally lazier by leaps and bounds. There are those in America today, who, in a search for power, can persuade the public to let them do all the thinking. It is just this kind of shiftlessness that opens the door to the complete political takeover of entire countries. I remain independent of any and all such "public inter est" groups. I refuse to be spoon-fed a pablum of someone else's political ideas and recommendations. I do my own thinking, and I suggest the rest of the responsible Ameri can public do the same. Pam Keller Sophomore, chemistry major I pull my blue jeans on The UNL Gay Action Group has been mounting pro motional efforts in coordination with the National Gay Task Force to publicize National Blue Jeans Day, Friday, April 14. The point of NBJD is not to identify everyone in JxilTL UN Get a Running Start en your Summer Wardrobe Jogging shorts & assorted top starting at 6.95 RAVEN SPORTSWEAR A Factory Outlet with factory outlet prices. 12th ft Q Mon. ft Thurs. 10-9 Tuet. ft Wed. 10-6 Fri.ftSat 10-6 Sun. 12-5 435-6482 denim as homosexual; rather, it is a day when all those who support the homophile movement express their sup port publicly by wearing blue jeans. The focus of NBJD is not an accusatory one. If infer ences are made by some individuals, the responsibility for those inferences is their own. In view of the increasingly conservative and isolationist social and political trends in both our community and in this country, it has become increasingly important to examine our values regarding those around us. There will inevitably be kidding and perhaps some has sle for those wearing blue jeans April 14. The point we must recognize is that we do not really know who is who on NBJD. The same is true every day. Persecution and bias against those who are rightly or wrongly presumed to be homosexual is irrational. In terms of everyday social function, the gay person is qualitatively no different from hisher heterosexual counterpart. Need less to say, the spheres where real differences occur are ones which are the business of individuals directly involved. For this reason, we strongly urge those supporting the homophile movement and a more healthy, accepting and nurturing community to show it when it counts. In Pride, UNL Gay Action Group Board of Directors He's right; what's left? I would like to comment on allegations by the YAF that the speakers brought to campus by UPC represent only the "left." When I first heard of these charges, I set forth in a systematic and analytic way to see if they could be verified. The guy living in the room next door to me has a very nice pair of speakers. As you enter his room you will find that one is on the left and one is on the right. Seems fair enough to me. Now, there is no apparent difference be tween the two except for their posititions iclative to each other. Curious. Both of them are hooked up to the same AM-FM receiver, so put out exactly the same sound. What is interesting, though, is that different listeners react differently to what they hear. Curiouser and curiouser. Finally, I took up a position in what I guessed to be the immediate center of the room, then turned around. Do you know what I found out? What had been the right speaker was now on the left, and what had been the left speaker was now on the right. It seems that left and right are relative to how you look at things, despite the fact that everyone likes to believe they are right. Conclusion: If you take up a position on the extreme right, then everything will be to the left of you. Hueristically, Michael J.
