page 10 daily nebraskan thursday, april 13, 1978 Corrections Students mix local, state YAF identities In the April 10 issue of the Daily Neb raskan it was incoirectly reported that no candidates filed for Residence Hall Associa tion secretary and treasurer. Actually, these positions are filled by appointment by the RHA president. In the April 10 issue, an article on the 11th Annual University of Nebraska Inter collegiate Rodeo contained several inadver tant errors. Nancy Dent, a barrel racer from Lincoln, is a senior. Charlene Apple garth placed third in goat tying and Dean Edelman is a member of the Kearney State College rodeo team, and not the UNRA. The Daily Nebraskan incorrectly report ed in a faculty senate story that the senate discussed using cash funds to bring a facul ty salaries increase up to 9 percent. The senate discussed using a cash fund form from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The medical center, not the University Health Center, is expected to have $4.5 million in profits next year. It was also incorrectly reported Wed nesday that Dan Lamprecht, ASUN Special Topics Committee chairman, spoke with Gateway Bank officials about the status of accounts held by Young Americans for Freedom and the Nebraska University Pub lic Interest Research Group. Lamprecht actually spoke with officials in the Student Activities office. According to Jack Guthrie, coordinator of the Program Planning Office of Student Activities, all student organizations must bank through Student Activities, not Gate way Bank, as reported. Student activities has one general student organizations' ac count in Gateway Bank, Gurthrie said. It was incorrectly reported Wednesday that it is illegal to ride bicycles on 52 Lin coln streets. According to Bob Kuzelka, of the State Planning and Programming Com mission, it is only illegal to ride bikes on interstate highways.. By Todd Hegert The Young Americans for Freedom's recent actions against the use of student fees for the speakers program, and against university support of the Nebraska Univer sity Public Interest Research Group have made the conservative organization one of the more familiar ones on campus. Yet YAF's publicity is a maze of mis conceptions, according to Jeff Chizek, chairman of the campus chapter of YAF. The UNL chapter suffers from an iden tity problem because people get it confused with the state YAF chapter, Chizek said. "A lot of people use UNL YAF and Ne braska YAF synonymously by mistake and I catch a lot of flack for some things that go on at the state level," Chizek said. 'The state chapter is headed by Terry Cannon," Chizek said. "We are both part of a national YAF organization and we (the UNL YAF) work closely with Cannon and the Nebraska YAF, but we are differ ent chapters," he said. There are 75 members in the UNL YAF, Chizek said. They have been forced to meet off campus because anti-YAF senti ment on campus creates too many "hassles", he said. "We realize that there are a lot of people that don't like us," Chizek said. "Anti-YAF sentiment is evident in Daily Nebraskan editorials and even in Daily Nebraskan articles. We have never asked for student fees and never will because we know that not all students agree with us," he said. Although much of the publicity YAF has been receiving seems to carry anti-YAF sentiments, Chizek said he does not con sider it all negative. "We've been getting a lot of publicity and it's all coming because of our effec tiveness," Chizek said. "With all this pub licity we must be reaching a lot of people." The secret to YAF's effectivenes, Chizek said, is its letter-writing campaigns to conservative members of the com munity. "When we organize people in the com munity that are sympathetic to our views they put pressure on the regents or state senators and things get done," Chizek said. "Instead of trying to work through stu dents we have found it more effective to work directly through the tax-paying citizens of Nebraska and the (NU) Board of Regents," Chizek said. "The regents listen to grievances of students but they don't really represent the students," Chizek said. "The regents repre sent the people of Nebraska who pay for the university through their taxes. The regents are elected by citizens of Nebraska to represent them in the operation of the university," he said. "Just because students go to school here doesn't mean it's their university," Chizek said. Some people accuse YAF of mounting its campaign against NUPIRG in order to get NUPIRG's office space in the Nebras ka Union, he said. But the position against NUPIRG is part of a national YAF policy against public interest research groups, he said. YAF also has been accused of receiving the money William Buckley got for speaking at UNL, Chizek said. "We send out letters showing some ways that the university is being taken advan tage of by political groups and simply tell people where to write if they believe, as we do, that the university should be non-political," Chizek said. "Some people call this back-stabbing." Chizek said although the UNL YAF is part of a national organization they receive no orders on what activities they should participate in. "There are always plenty of issues to be active about," he said. "The UNL chapter is as active as I want to make it and right now I think we are about as active as we can be. "If we are not running down the speakers program, we are after NUPIRG or the Women's Resource Center," Chizek said. Chizek said YAF opposes NUPIRG re ceiving space in the Union because NU PIRG does not represent 100 percent of the students at UNL. He said YAF also opposes having the Women's Resource Cen ter in the Union because at most the Women's Resource Center can represent only half of the student body.
