The Sheldon Film Theater will show Jean Cocteau's
1946 classic, La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast)
this Sunday and Monday, April 9 and 10. This French
production of the old fable stars Josette Day as Beauty
and Jean Marais as the Beast, the Prince and Avenant.
"The oft-tried but seldom-known accomplishment of
telling a familiar fairy-tale with pure imagery and en
chantment through the sensuous devices of the screen has
been almost perfectly realized by the French poet-play
wright, Jean Cocteau," Bosley Crowther of The New York
Times wrote when Beauty and the Beast opened in 1947
in New York.
Crowther continued, "(the film) is an eminent model
of cinema achievement in the realm of poetic fantasy . . .
Studied or not for philosophy, this is a sensuously fascin
ating film, a fanciful poem in movement given full arti
culation on the screen."
Screening will be at 7 and 9 p.m., and admission is
$2.00.
