Outdoor crew practices
advantage of Texas trips
want
ads
The UNL crew made good use of their
spring break by doing outdoor rowing at
the University of Texas in Austin.
According to Frank Sands, UNL crew
coach, the temperature in Austin last week
was between 75 and 80 degrees. He said
the men's and women's varsity and fresh
men team members rowed twice a day. The
trip to Texas lasted from March 16 to 25.
Sands said the Nebraska team had the
water all to themselves and that he saw
improvements during workouts.
"There's a good chance every (UNL)
crew should finish in the top six in the
country," Sands said. He said the men's
and women's varsity teams each had lost
only one team member from last year.
The crew had hoped to compete against
Oklahoma on the way back from Austin,
but the weather there was not good enough
for rowing, Sands said.
The crew also might be rowing on
Capitol Beach this spring if the owner of
the lake grants permission. Sands said
Capitol Beach is 800 to 1,000 meters
longer than Oak Lake, where the crew
usually practices. He said practices may
continue in the new indoor tank of the
weather is bad.
The tank will be dedicated Saturday at
1:30 on the crew's Press Day, with a
banquet following the dedication.
Jack Frailey of Boston, whose know
ledge of crew is noted across the nation,
will attend the dedication.
