to the editor
Although I was glad to see the March 10 Daily Nebra
skan article on "The herbivorous v. the carnivorous" and
"Veterinarian claims rat death essential for research,"
after reading them you come across one-sided.
I feel it is your duty to print the other side. You made
an attempt by interviewing Nellie Shriver, American Vete
tarians spokesman, but it was a poor interview. How
about an article with some facts.
She was right that land should be used for crops not
feed animals. Twenty-one pounds of grain protein that is
suitable for human consumption when fed to a calf pro
duced only 1 pound of protein for man.
Twenty million tons of grain protein fed to livestock
equals only 2 million tons of meat protein.
So how logical is it to continue to raise cattle instead
of crops? (These facts are taken from Animal Liberation
by Peter Singer.)
Research animals are exploited for the benefit of man.
Experiments are repeated over and over across the
country where results could be obtained in the ways
Shriver suggested.
Ron Jones, Health, Education and Welfare animal
manager, stated that the animals are treated well while
allowed to be alive with cages, sterile bedding, food and
water. Not what I would consider the perfect existence.
John Berssett, a University of Nebraska Medical Center
veterinary assistant, said no unnecessary pain is inflicted
at the center. Who are we to decide what pain is neces
sary? Pain is pain and animals feel it the same as humans,
and men have the right to live without it. I am ashamed of
a society that condones murder and exploitation of our
fellow creatures.
