Concerning Nellie Scriver's statements in Friday's issue
about planting Nebraska to fruit trees, 1 would like to
hear her plans on how she will find water to irrigate half
of Nebraska. Also it would be interesting to see the
government buy this surplus of fruit, considering that
they do not know what to do with the surplus of grain we
have right now. It is plain to see that Nellie and her 3,000
American Vegetarian friends do not understand agri
culture or the world food problem.

Self-appointment
Last week provided the prime example of why the NU
Board of Regents should not grant ASUN any more power
than they have. While most of us were watching "Eight is
Enough," Greg Johnson was appointing himself to
Student Court (the third branch of student government.)
I realize this is entirely constitutional under the present
ASUN constitution, but is it ethical? ASUN does not have
a code of ethics, but I feel Johnson's personal ethics
should have kept him from using the presidency for per
sonal self-interest and gain.
In order to avoid a future incident of this nature, I
suggest an ASUN constitutional revision that would pro
hibit the president from indulging in self-appointments
no matter how qualified he may be. Our ASUN senate
lacks the ability to put a situation in its proper perspect
ive as Johnson was approved by a vote of 18 for and one
against.

This article was not even lousy journalism, it was not
journalism at all.
As an adviser, I recommend that the students who pro
duced this article visit the UNL Counseling Center as soon
as possible. They should give serious consideration to
new career alternatives.

Well-grounded complaints
Once again the University Grounds Department has
shown its efficiency in getting a job done. Only problem is
that the job is four months late and in the wrong place.
I'm talking about this so-called shed on East Campus
which is supposed to be a bus stop.
Anyone who rides the bus and gets on in front of Burr
Fedde (residence hall) knows that it is warmer in the
lobby of the dorms, which are in full view of the bus.
So why is this shed, which looks like it was drug up
from the feedlot, put there?
Amateur attempt
Your recent full-page article (Wednesday, March 8)
about the William E. Barkley Speech and Hearing Clinic
was deplorable.
The workiiig and content of the story was an insult to
your readers. The article seemed to be geared to the third
grade level.
The photographs accompanying the article were not
better. In an amateurish attempt at style, the photo
grapher ended up with a series of out-of-focus, cluttered,
and uninteresting pictures. They made the bright and
cheerful pre-school clinic liok like some dank and dreary
"boarding house" from a Dickens' novel.
Racquetball headline mistake
The headline on a letter to the editor concerning the
use of racquetball courts in Wednesday's Daily Nebras
kan carried a headline that might have been offensive
to some readers.
The Daily Nebraskan apologizes for this error.
The letter, submitted by Melissa Kasselder, Amy
Reynolds and Linda Brown, criticized so-called ''varsi
ty athletes" monopolizing racquetball courts.
The letter said: "Perhaps a viable alternative to the
present situation would be to open all the courts to
students from 8 ajn. to 10 p.m.; reserving two hours
for varsity athletes.
"Considering the ratio of general students to varsity
athletes, we don't think this idea preposterous at all,
rather it is a sensible compromise."
Because of a mistake in the paper's production, the
headline reflected negatively on the letter.
The Daily Nebraskan has a very conservative policy
regarding the use of obscenities. This headline definite
ly was not within the Daily Nebraskan guidelines.
ASUN discusses Northeast Radial
ASUN passed a resolution citing recommended limits
for the proposed Northeast Radial planned by the city at
the senate meeting Wednesday night.
The Lincoln City Planning Commission is considering
several proposed routes connecting the downtown with
northeastern Lincoln. Several of the possible routes would
affect recreational fields and areas for UNL expansion, as
well as changing traffic flow around the campus.
ASUN recommended the radial be built no farther
north than Q Street and no farther west than 21st Street
to provide the best conditions for UNL students.
The senate also passed several amendments to the fee
allocaion bill, including changing the name to Committee
for Fee Allocations.
"The name Fees Allocation Committee - FAC - could
have unfortunate connotations," said senior business sena
tor Mike Brogan of Norfolk, who recommended the
change.
The bill, which transfers allocation of A Line funds
from the Fees Allocation Board to ASUN, will be voted
on at the Board of Regents meeting March 18.
Vice President Charles Fellingham reported that a con
tract with NUPIRG concerning research programs will not
be drafted until the new senate takes over. "We didn't
want to take any action that the new senate might not be
in total agreement with," explained Fellingham.
In other business, the senate appointed Dan Ripa, a
sophomore arts and sciences major from Wilber, to the
NU Student Court. Ripa filled the last vacancy, bringing
the total number of justices to seven .
Where we really need a bus stop is in front of Lyman
Hall. Anybody who has stood in the north wind knows we
need one there. But no, they decide to put it where it is
more in the way than where it does any good -not to
mention tearing up the lawn to put it in.
The East Campus looks pretty nice, that is, if we could
get the Grounds Dept. to stop tearing it up. Now they
think they need to tear up all that lawn in front of the
East Campus Union to beautify it. At least they could do
this during the summer, when we do not have to look and
listen to all the equipment.
If they redo the East Campus lawn the same intelligent
way they put in the sprinkler system there, it will take
forever. That intelligence is to put sod in first and then
tear it up to put sprinklers in!
