page 2 daily nebraskan friday, march 10, 1978 "si Chairman denies charges The chairman of the committee that considers nominations for distin guished teaching awards re cently denied charges that the selection procedure lacked student input. Donal Burns of the Fa culty Committee on Instruc tional Development said such a charge was "ludi crous." Burns said the Faculty Instructional Development Committee has five faculty members, one undergrad uate student who is a mem ber of the student advisory board to the College of Arts and Sciences, one graduate student and one associate college dean. At least one faculty member has complained that the selection process was unfair. "The committee will lit erally refuse to admit any candidate without student input," Bums said. One way students have input is through teaching evaluations, Burns said. Stu dents' evaluations for the past three years are an im portant part of the commit tee's decision, he said. Award nominations are made by students, faculty members or alumni, he said. According to a letter from Burns to the faculty, the first criteria for selecting nominees is the "quality of teaching and interaction with undergraduates and graduate students in the classroom as evidenced by student evaluations, excep tional performance by stu dents, and letters from alumni." All nominations require a cover letter, the nomination form and supporting evi dence. Evidence includes the student, faculty and alumni evaluations. Feb. 15 was the last day nominations were accepted. The awards will be present ed April 14 at the UNL Honors Convocation. Tired of interruptions?
