Exon reaffirmed his support for the farm strike movement last night before a standing room only crowd on UNL's East Campus. Exon was part of a forum sponsored by Alpha Zeta, an agriculturarhonorary society.' Other members on the panel included Bertrand farmer Stan DeBoer, a leader of the American Agriculture Movement and Fairbury farmers Ralph Kobel, a Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation spokes man and Daryle Holle, a national farmers organization spokesman. The discussion was moderated by UNL Ex tension Agricultural Economist Everett Petersen. "The American Agricultural Movement and the farm strike are the greatest things to happen to farming in a long time," said Exon, who is running for U.S. Senator. "Anyone who is not for 100 percent parity is in effect saying that the American farmer is a second-class citizen." Calling the suggestion that farmers can solve their own f a f SAY, HAVE you GOT LEAJO Mt, HEWE7 "1 NEITHER LEfJGEi ii,,p n problems without the government "bunk", Exon said a totally free market system will not work. He explained that U.S. farmers are in competition with European and Communist countries which subsidize their own farmers. The only major point of disagreement between the panelists came when Exon recommended that the United States meet with other wheat -exporting countries and raise the world's price for that commodity to $4.50 per bushel. Knobel replied that while the United States would abide by such an agreement, the other countries partici pating would cut prices and increase production to cap ture a larger share of the world market. Knobel went on to say that while the Farm Bureau supports 100 percent parity, it maintains that government control will be either too expensive or restrictive to work. s - . - VI AlfrIA h?
