Three-event winner'Steve Graves helped
Kansas University win the Big Eight Con
ference swimming and diving champion
ships Saturday at" the UNL Sports Com
plex. Graves won the 200-and 400-yard
individual medley events and set a Big
riight record in the 200-yard breaststroke
with a 2:07.48 time.
Another triple winner, University of
Missouri's Kevin peForrest, was named
the meet's outstanding swimmer. De For
rest won the title with victories in the
50-and 100-yard freestyle events and the
100 -yard butterfly. Missouri placed second.
Iowa State University last year's Big
Fight champs, placed second in the 400
yard relay, behind Missouri, but still had
enough good times to qualify for the
NCAA championships. ISU finished third,
coming to the meet with the best dual
meet record of 9-1 .
With his team trailing KU 255-203
after Friday's competition, ISU coach
Richard Quick said he doubted ISU could
catch up, but that Kansas' lead did not
surprise him.
"I thought all along they were the
team to beat." Quick said. "They have
versatility. They've got more boys scoring
in three events than any other team-very
well-coached and well-prepared team."
Two of Oklahoma State University's
swimmers set Big Eight records and had
NCAA qualifying times. They were Paul
Nash with a 15:35.12 time in the 1,650
yard freestyle and John Marshall with a
4:30.82 time in the 500-yard freestyle.

titles. Both had NCAA qualifying point
totals also.
UNL's swim team coached by John
Reta, finished seventh in the meet. Kansas
State University has no men's swimming
team.
Despite UNL's low 72-point total,
Reta said he saw encouraging signs in the
first two days of competition.
"We broke a slug of varsity records,"
Reta said. In the 800-yard freestyle relay,
the UNL team of Bob Mizelle, Kris Rut
ford, Goran Westerlund and Jeff Keller
shaved 1.65 seconds off the old UNL
record of 7:17.85. The team of Bob Hart
ford, Mark Shapland, Mark Crowier and
Dick Conradt broke the varsity record in
the 400-yard medley relay with a time of
3:33.50.
Both Hartford and senior Richard
Maack broke the varsity record in the 100
yard backstroke with their respective
times of 54.59 and 54.93 seconds.
The highest finish by any UNL team
member was junior Mark Crowder's sixth
place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.
Final team standings for the meet were
Kansas with 426 points, Missouri with
354 points, Iowa State with 341 points,
Oklahoma State with 252 points,
Oklahoma with 2 1 7 points, Colorado with
201 points, and UNL in last place with
72 points.
