Royal Heritage, which began on PBS Jan. 28, is a journey through these private buildings, from Buckingham Palace to Balmoral; from the coronation coach to the royal yacht, Britannia, to Queen Victoria's railway train. The collection numbers da Vincis (almost 1,000 drawings), Rembrandts, Holbeins, Sevres china, Water ford glass, furniture, jewels, a multitude of miniatures (a favorite interest of Queen Victoria), and enough armor to outfit a regiment of princes. Royal Heritage marks the first time the general public has been able to view close-up so many royal treasures, and the interiors of the private buildings which house them. The hostnarrator of Royal Heritage is Sir Huw Wheldon, former director of BBC television. Sir Huw has also written the series narration in collaboration with eminent British historian, J.H. Plumb. A lavishly illustra ted volume, Royal Heritage, The Story of Britain's Royal Builders and Collectors, co-authored by Plumb and Sir Huw,. was published in England by BBC Publications in association with the television series. The book now has been published in the U.S. by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. The series unrolls a kind of royal tapestry a tapestry of time with the figures of the kings and queens who amassed this heritage interwoven with film of the royal events which have marked their history. An audience of over 10 million viewed the series when the show was broadcast in Britain as part of the BBC's contribution to Queen Elizabeth's 1977 Silver Jubilee celebrations. The program received the highest ratings ever recorded in that country for a television art series. The series continues Sunday, Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. with 'The First Three Georges." The Trooping the Color ceremoney was first performed, Kew Gardens were planted and the Royal Aca demy was founded under the first three Georges. Encouraged by George I and George II, Handel com posed his greatest music, and George III bought more paintings by Canaletto than exist in any private collection. The books that were his passion became the basis of the British Library in the British Museum. The Gold State Coach in which he rode to open his first Parliament, the china he collected, and the paintings of Gainsborough re flect the confidence of the 18th century. Yet across its ordered landscapes hung the shadow of the mob and political rebellion, and, in the case of the king, private griefs and personal tragedy. Locations in this program range from the Herrenhau sen Gardens in Hanover to the country houses of Houghton Hall, Chevening and Chatsworth, and the Queen's Ballroom at Windsor. Prince Charles talks about Geroge Ill's education and shows some of the essays, architectural drawings and scientific instruments he produced or used as Prince of Wales. Royal Heritage is a production of the BBC. Producer for the BBC is Michael Gill (producer of the award winning programs Civilization and America). k A DEATH IN CANAAN Joan Barthel's 'A Death in Canaan' starring Stefanie Powers as the auth or whose best-selling, non-fiction account of Connecticut townspeople rising to the defense of teenager Peter Reilly, accused of murdering his mother, will be broadcast on 'The CBS Wednesday Night Movies' March 1. Also starring in the film, based on the Barthel book, are Paul Clemens (pictured), James Sutorius, Tom At kins, Jacqueline Brookes, Tom Atkins and Yuki Shimoda. Miss Powers stars as Joan Barthel, the freelance journalist who had moved into the New England community with her husband and daughter just prior to Sept. 28, 1973. when 18-year-old Peter Reilly (Clemens) was taken into custody, charged with the mutilation murder of his mother. A handful of Canaan citizens were outraged at the police handling of Peter, a quiet and kind boy with a very passive nature that, in their opinion, precluded his having committed so violent a crime.
