Guest artists shine at chamber orchestra performance
By Charlie Krig
The Nebraska Chamber Orchestra performed a well
balanced program of compositions Friday night at the
First Plymouth Congregational Church but the highlights
of the evening came from the two guest soloists.

review
The guest conductor, Alfred Savia, directed well but
the result lacked dramatic quality. His conducting during
Bach's Suite No. 1 in C Major and Schubert's Symphony
No. 5 in B-flat Major provided intervals of pleasant music
but the majority of the work suffered from poor timing
and insufficient clarity.
The Bach composition improved as the orchestra
progressed. The bright, fast "Courante" was marred at
first by muddled phrasing and the "Forlane" had parti
cularly unexciting dynamics. Perhaps a longer warm-up
would have built up the energy needed to start the
concert with power.
The second selection, Josef Rheinberger's Concerto for
Organ and Orchestra, featured the first talented soloist,
John Levick, and the remarkable pipe organ in the church.
Levick is Minister of Music and Fine Arts for First Ply
mouth Church so his experience with the organ is evident.
His effective use of the two sets of pipes with precise
finger-work provided a lucid counterpart to the orchestra.
The well-rehearsed piece exhibited tight timing between
soloist and company.
The third piece featured a different artist with another
instrument. Classical guitarist Stephen Waschter displayed
an ability for expression during the Concert for Guitar
and Small Orchestra by Hector Villa-lobos. His transitions
from subtle chord progressions to flowing lyrical phrases
to rhythmic, driving string-picking were flawless. Espec
ially sensitive was his solo in the middle of the concerto,
a section that let all his talent shine.
The final piece, Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, also
suffered from blandness and poor timing like the Bach
composition did. However, Schubert's symphony fared
better in the end because of the successful variations in
the dominant theme due to somewhat better phrasing
and dynamics.
If the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra could perform
the concert again, an obvious suggestion would be to drop
the Bach from the program and concentrate more effort
on the Schubert. A shorter program of excellent works
would have been better than the resulting combination
of two superior and two inferior interpretations.
