Nowhere. . .
Continued from page 7
In High Anxiety, however, he has no
story, so there is no suspense, no parody
and therefore, no comedy.
What he has is another Mel Brooks
movie. The cast is familiar: Cloris Leach
man plays Nurse Diesel, a sort of reductio
ad absurdum of Frau Blucher in Young
Frankenstein. Harvey Korman is basically
the same stiff he always plays.
At least Madeline Kahn survives the
script and stays effective, but she can't
escape the comic void she is placed in.
There is kind of a depressing trend
emerging here. In his first few films,
Brooks hit the audience over the head with
his craziness and incentive mania. He
screamed, "LAUGH," at us and shocked us
with "Springtime for Hitler" and a singing
Frankenstein.
We laughed then. It was funny it was
hilarious!
Now Brooks just looks us straight in the
eyes and says, "This is a Mel Brooks movie.
You will now laugh uproariously."
He is losing his respect for his scripts
and seems to be in the business of making
his own legend. Unfortunabely, the
comedy is getting lost somewhere.
