Gade said the system replaces one that was not power
ful enough to transmit to every area of the campus. It
also provides the police with a direct line to the Lincoln
Police Department.
Ruth Michalecki, director of the UNL Telecommuni
cations Center, said the new system, cost approximately
$50,000, and gives University Police its own radio. In the
past, University Police shared a radio with campus organi
zations. This caused a large amount of interference and
forced the police to wait to use the radio, even in emer
gencies, Michalecki said.
"There is a tendency to quit listening to a radio that is
blaring all rhy," she said. "If 90 percent of the messages
are for someone else you may miss the one that finally
comes for you."
Michalecki said the Telecommunications Center has
been trying to obtain a new system for nearly five years.
"There wasn't anyone in administration who didVt
know that the police needed this radio," Michalecki said.
"But there was always something else that they needed
worse. It was just a matter of waiting for the dollars.'
Michalecki said the delay may have been beneficial
She said more efficient radios have been made during the
last five years and University Police now have "the best
equipment they could want."
Other departments have benefitted from the liew sys
tem, Michalecki said, because the police's old equipment
was reassigned to them.
