thursday, febrUary 0, 1978 page 6 ad lib Rock group finding obstacles on road to success By Casey McCabe Blackberry Winter has established itself as one of the midwest's favorite dance bands with extensive touring in recent years. But going from a popular midwest band, to national recognition has proved to be a formidable hurdle for the group. Currently the band is residing in Lincoln, and played to a large home-town crowd for last weekend's Groundhogs Day Dance at the Nebraska East Union. 'The midwest Is a drag to try to get out of," said Blackberry Winter lead vocalist Chris Schoon. "Right now we're maintaining a subsistence existence, and putting any extra money towards advancing the band. We hope to send demo tapes to all the major record producers and possibly land a good contract." The band has long been appearing in some 20 states, from Idaho to Texas, with people like Wishbone Ash, or Brewer and Shipley, and while they haven't been able to launch out of the midwest, they have received national acclaim. Cashbox magazine chose their single "Answers and the Aging" as "pick hit of the week", while the group's self-titled album also was choseri pick of the week by Record World, another leading trade publication. Familiar songs "I guess our writing and arranging would be the most identifying part of the group," views Schoon, "In a sit down concert we would do 1 2 of our original songs. But at dances, people want to hear familiar songs. We don't want to put our material down the audience's throat." Blackberry Winter's original songs such as "Luck be a Lady" and "Xanadu" fit into the Head East tradition and the group's vocal qualities lend themselves well to material by such artists as Kansas, Boston, and Foreigner. Also found in the groups repertoire is music by Steely Dan, Paul McCartney, Pablo Cruz, and Todd Rundgren. "Steely Dan is by far our favorite to play," noted Schoon. "It's the most sophisticated music we do." Distinctive The six members of Blackberry Winter aid in voclas, sometimes producing a distinctive five-part harmony. Be sides Schoon, the band consists of Murry Kahler on drums, Fred 0ettge on guitar, Randy Sharp on bass, Luis Cusido on first keyboard and Mark Garrison, on second keyboard. The group owns its own eight-track recording studio here in town, and has been using It for the production of demo tapes for promotional purposes. Schoon said the band is hedging from doing any actual record production there. "We don't want to take the risk of $15,000 to put out an album Just for promotion," he said, "A lot of what we're going to be doing hinges on getting our demo tapes in the right hands. We've had different offers but ho cash up front. The deals were too shakey so we chose to tpaci them off." , . "Right now we're without a manager, but that Could change if the LA deal would come through," Schoon said. . . "If we come into it, we're willing to go to L.A. and start from the bottom." i, v ."'
