Commentator Paul Harvey
Harvey optimistic
about farms, youth
in Lincoln speech
Radio commentator Paul Harvey expressed optimism
for America and emphasized that Americans seem to look
for bad news. Harvey made the remarks in a speech to the
Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Monday evening.
During his speech, he voiced the familiar radio per
sonality but his tone changed during a press conference.
"I decided to report about the marriages that do last,
the planes that do land and the people that keep work
ing," Harvey said. "The biggest headlines are never more
important than the weather. The press is a flame-fanner."
He said he thinks the best news he gives his listeners
often comes during the commercials. "There is no better
lesson I can give my listeners than the fact that they can
save 30 percent on their home heating bills if they install
MacLinberg-Duncan Weatherproofing," he said.
Harvey said he is amazed by the large number of long
lasting marriages in Nebraska. He said he also is "tremen
dously encouraged" by the character of American youth.
"I'm not so sure that if I were reared in this genera
tion that I would be so hard working," Harvey revealed
But, he said, 'Kent State was a turning point. Young
people realized that they had to do the 'establishment
thing' again."
Harvey said that he considers today's -dictionaries a
"rubber ruler" for this generation to learn what is pro
per grammar. "They even include the word 'boughten'
now," he mused.
A cattle owner, Harvey said he must stay in broad
casting to stay in farming. But, he added, "Most of us are
knocking off for the winter to do our parading."
But things are getting better for the farmer and the
country, Harvey said. Government is too big, but self
government will not work without self-discipline, he said.
