letters I
. to the editorl
After reading the editorial on "the right
to choose abortion," I felt compelled to
speak out.
People generally miss the gravity of
what abortion means to our society.
Pro-abortionists in this world (they're
not just in the UJS.) reflect perhaps the
greatest of all kinds of selfishness.
They are selfish in that for their own
convenience, they choose to kill the child.
The child may not physically resemble
anything, or it may not by the Supreme
Court definition be officially old enough to
be labeled a human being, but the seed of
that child exists within the parents minds.
To abort means to kill or eliminate that
concept of a human being.
Blindness to this fact is just a result of
selfishness. Selfishness is probably the rea
son for the pregnancy.
The result of this kind of societal sel
fishness is not greater individual freedom,
but self-extinction. Everyone will agree
that selfishness is an evil which tends to
remove one from touching the life-force
by which we live.
This denial of that life-force will result
in death.
Look at the world in which we now live.
Our environment is rapidly swirling
down the drain. By constant polluting and
destroying for our selfish wants, we are
growing closer to Armageddon.
If you think that's a joke, you're wrong.
The momentum of our exploitation of
life and our environment is too great.
We are like a great fuse which is near burn
ing out.
The lack of respect for life, as illustrated
by the pro-abortionists is just a sign of the
times. Before our young generation dies
out naturally, I am convinced that civili
zation will smother itself in its own ignor
Please, respect life.
That's all we have left!
'Bottle bill urged
Harry Berggren
The Agriculture and Environment Com
mittee of the Nebraska Legislature will be
considering LB818, the "bottle bill", Fri
day. For more than six years the Legislature
has considered legislation of this type.
Nebraskans now support this measure
three to one. Without question the time
has come for passage of this legislation.
However, some senators may need some
encouragement to remind them that
their constituency supports LB818.
Please remember that pop and beer are
cheaper per ounce in returnable containers.
Non-returnable containers cost you four
ways: 1. for the contents, 2. for the
containers, 3. for the container's disposal,
and 4. for the litter collection.
The annual cost is estimated in excess of
$350 million for litter cleanup.
Nebraskans spend more than $200,000
through taxes each year for litter cleanup.
It is important to remember that non
returnable bottles and cans compose a
large portion of this litter.
Through the use of returnable bottles
for beer and pop, we as Americans spend
more than 1 percent of the total U.S.
energy budget totaling more than 150,000
barrels of oil per day. Returnables signifi
cantly would save energy.
Contrary to the contentions of the
bottlers and canners, a returnable policy
would create more jobs. This has been
proven in Oregon where a similar bill has
been in effect since 1972.
Conservation of basic resources is be
coming a national priority. Yet each year
only 2.6 percent of throw-away bottles
ever get recycled.
Assuming an 88 percent reduction in
throwaways, nearly 70 tons per day of
litter would be kept from our roadsparks
and landfills.
The case for returnables goes on and
on. It has been tested successfully in Ore
gon. You can help make this badly needed
legislation a reality.
Your attendance at the Public Hearing
this Friday a 2 p.m. in the State Capitol
2230 can make the difference.
If you would like to become more
active in this legislation, please call
NUPIRG, 472-2448, or visit Nebraska
Union 117.
