Winter Walpurgisnacht: revelry in the witching hour
By Bonnie Lutz
Picture a place where one can watch belly dancers
sway to exotic music in one room, while a juggler per
forms feats next door.
Down the hall, professional stakeholders demonstrate
slick curves and super-speed maneuvers. Grab a fresh hot
pretzel or runza, stroll into another room and throw darts
at a lifesize poster of Anita Bryant.
Later, after stomping around to polka band oom
pahs one can relax at a dinner theater, and laugh at a
troupe of comedians.
UNL students can see all of this Friday, Jan. 27, in
the Nebraska Union at the third annual Winter Walpur
gisnacht. The event is organized by U students on a Union
Program Council committee. However, it is a showcase for
UPC, the union and other campus groups, according to
Ron Dahlke, event organizer.
Booths will be in the main lounge of the union repre
senting various UNL organizations. Dahlke said there will
be more than 50 events.
In addition, there will be contests, including a paper
airplane contest and a billiards contest, called 'Beat our
Billiards Best, in which contestants compete against
last semester's winners.
The UPC also is sponsoring thumb-wrestling and team
jello eating contests, he said.
For those who have been humiliated by vending
machines UPC offers students a chance to get back at
them. For one ticket, a person can participate in "Vendo
Kill', the art of smashing vending machines."
Walpurgisnacht will feature local amateur entertainers.
Groups and individuals from UNL who competed in the
Bob Hope Search for Collegiate Talent Contest will per
form, including Venezuelan Style, which is in national
talent search finals. UNL's Scarlet and Cream Singers
and Nebraskats, a Kearney group, will perform.
For polka enthusiasts, The Loose Brothers, a band
from Omaha, and the Bohemian Stationary Marching
Band, a UNL group, will play.
Local singers will include Dave Landis, Sharon Kokes,
Laura McClaine and Don Beins,
The Women's Resource Center will sponsor a demon-
