A Dec. 21 art theft from the Nebraska
East Union has caused the relocation of
some art objects and the repossession of
others by Sheldon Art Gallery according
to the Nebraska East Union Manager.
Daryl Swanson said he noticed a 3-by-6
macrame wall hanging was missing at
5:15 p.m. on the -last day of fall semester
finals. He later determined the hanging
had been seen last at 3:15 the same day.
Jon Nelson, assistant director of Univer
. sity galleries, said the Mary Kester origi
nal was valued at between $40Gand $450.
It was insured, he said.
Kester, described by Nelson as one of
the best fiber artists working in Nebraska,
is an Omaha resident. The hanging was
bought by Sheldon Art Gallery two years
ago and has been displayed in the East
Union since late summer.
Capt. Robert Edmunds, director of the
criminal and security division of UNL
Campus Police said police have no suspects
in the case. Edmunds said police were not
notified until "quite some time after the
theft.
Sheldon loans art objects for use in cam
pus buidlings at a rate of $10 a year for
each art piece, Swanson said. This cost
covers framing and placement, he said.
The theft has caused this loan policy to
be reconsidered, Swanson said, adding
that tennination of the program has, been
discussed.
Nelson said that initially the gallery
considered asking that all bans be
returned, but the campus loan policy will
be continued.
"Relatively, our loss record hasn't been
bad," Swanson said, "but any loss at all
of a valuable piece is bad. He said
although the piece was insured, money
cannot replace an art object. The theft
was the first at the East Union.
Anyone with information of the theft
should contact UNL Campus Police or
Sheldon Art Gallery.

No one has to inform you how expensive text books are. And if you have to buy
a lot of textbooks this semester, the bill can take a good chunk of your money.
That's why we urge you to buy your textbooks from us. Why? Because we offer
you the lowest prices possible on all books, both new and used. On new text
books, the retail price is established by the publisher. Used textbooks are priced
at 75 of the current publisher's list price, which means you can save 25 over
the cost of a new book.
This semester, we sent out several thousand circulars to students offering them a
straight 5 percent discount off all textbook purchases, both new and used. If you
still have yours-use it; you can save an additional 5 percent!!!
