anks ties career high
in win over Blue Jays
By Jim Hunt
When Brian Banks pulled down his
fourth rebound of the Creighton University
UNL game Friday a smile of satisfaction
seemed to cross his face.
A few seconds later, Banks hit two free
throws to make the score 60-51 and he
knew the game was all but over. A few
minutes later the final buzzer sounded and
UNL walked away with a 65-58 victory
over the BlueJays in the first meeting be
tween the two schools in 45 years.
"The game meant a lot to us and the
coaches," Banks said. "When I made those
free throws, I could see their faces melt
and I said, 'It's all over now.' "
It was a satisfying night for Banks, who
tied his career high of 20 points, and for
his parents Randall and Barbara Banks of
Hammond, Ind., who were among the
14,262 spectators in the UNL Sports
Complex. .
"We didn't know this was a rival," Mrs.
Banks. said. "It's a biggie and Brian likes
biggies. What you might call cocky (his
behavior on the court) is the way he always
is. He's seldom down."
Terry Novak followed Banks in scoring
with a career high 16 points. After the
game, Novak, a senior forward, said he had
a; grudge to settle w.ith the BlueJays.
-yl was hurt by the fact that Creighton
didn't recruit me," Novak said. "1 was
going to say something about it before the
game but decided hot to. I'm a senior now
and can say anything I want to "
Even with the scoring of Banks and
Novak, Creighton coach Tom Apke said
UNL's defense was the key to the win.
"We had an early lead (104), but I
don't' know if we were ever in command,"
Apke said. "Their defense was the key, it
kept us out of our patterns."
UNL's man-to-man defense forced 21
BlueJay turnovers.
"I thought we made early shots, but
then we tried to force it too much and that
was the difference in the game," CU for
ward Rick Apke said. "I thought they all
played real well and I thought Banks shot
real well."
The Jays were led in scoring by their
front line of forward Tim McConnell with
16 points, Apke with 14 points and center
Dave Wesely with 12 points.
The win tied the Creighton-UNL series
at four wins each. The team will meet again
next year in Omaha.
UNL pushed its record to 3-0 Saturday
with a 74-64 win over the University of
South Dakota.
The Huskers led in the first half by as
many as 14 points.
Carl McPipe led the scoring for UNL
with 25 points and was followed by Terry
Novak, Curt Hedberg and Brian Banks with
10 points each.'
Husker basketball coach Joe Cipriano
and his squad meet the University of
Nevada-Reno tonight.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:35 p jn., in the
UNL Sports, Complex.
