If you are looking for original Christmas gift ideas this
year, you might try some that emphasize energy conser
vation. According to the UNL Department of Agricultural
Communications and home economics specialists, energy
saving gifts are abounding if shoppers know what to look
for.
Janet Wilson, UNL Extension consumer education
specialist, said "with the recent concern about rising
energy costs, a gift that helps conserve energy instead of
consume it would be welcome in just about any house
hold." With only 20 shopping days until Christmas, Wilson
suggests "before you buy another new small appliance,
stop and think, would the person really appreciate or need

There are a myriad of new energy-saving devices on the
market this year, and although some would make gooa
gift ideas, Wilson said a little imagination can often ac
complish as much.
For example, a bundle of firewood might be a welcome
gift for the family with a fireplace, she suggested. Dispos
able bottles that cannot be returned might be converted
into a candle-holder or vase and cloth napkins can save
the amount of paper thrown away.
Ardis Hutchins, UNL housing specialist, suggests giving
dimming light switches for anywhere in the home or a
clock thermostat that will- automatically turn the thermo
stat down at night and turn it up again in the morning.
"There also are new incandescent and fluorescent lights
coming on the market that can save energy and still give
the same amount of light," she said. "These cost a little
more, so they might make a nice gift for someone who
wouldn't buy them for themselves."
Gifts of clothing for a warmer Christmas have almost
endless possibilities and the nice thing about it is that
energy -conserving clothes are very much in style this year,
according to Mary Schluckebier, UNL extension clothing
specialist.
For bedwear, she suggests down-lined bathrobes, robes
with attached hoods, boot-type, fleece-lined bedroom
slippers and ski pajamas or those with feet.
Popular warm outdoor wear includes hats, scarves,
shawls, dickeys, muffs and the caped look on coats and
suits, she said.
