Co-ops share responsibility,
provide lower-cost housing
With the holidays coming, thoughts may
be turned toward home and the family.
Students often may wish there were
alternative life styles to the coldness of the
residence halls and students in apartments
may wish for a family to fill the loneli
ness. Members of the campus cooperatives
said these are exactly the advantages of
living in a co-op.
Charles Pille, president of the Pioneer
Co-op 1633 Q St. said he likes living in
the family style arrangement the co-op
offers. Everyone has responsibilities, which
range from dishwashing to clean-up, he
said.
Members of the Brown Palace, Inc.
Co-op 1900 B St., also share responsi
bilities running the house. Most work
details rotate every week, said Ron Phillips,
house manager.
The student's class schedules are con
sidered when making up the house duties,
he said. The duties at the Brown Palace
range from sweeping and mopping, to the
usual dish duty, he said.
The Cornhusker Co-op 705 N. 23rd St.
offers a bit more of the usual family life,
since it is co-ed, said John Harris, treasurer
of Cornhusker Co-op. The other two
co-ops are all male.
Cornhusker Co-op has one floor for
females and two for males, Harris said.
Eatine and working with the girls is a
great advantage to the life style offered at
Cornhusker Co-op, he said.
Members of all three co-ops said the
only hired help is a cook. All other opera
tions of the houses are up to the members.
No house parents are around, so the
responsibilities are on the members, they
said.
But, before visions of the perfect living
arrangement comes to mind, and the home
away from home, (without parents), is
planted in the reader's mind, one consid
eration is that the co-ops must abide by
university rules.
Each house has its own set of visitation
rules, set up with the university housing
authority. Co-op members cannot have
alcohol on the premises according to uni
versity policy though they are not on
university property.
The co-ops make . payments on their
buildings, therefore, each member owns a
share of the building while living there.
Another advantage to a co-op is low
cost. Pille said expenses at the Pioneer
co-op are nearly $400 less than those at a
residence hall. This is because most of the
cleaning work is done by the members, he
said.
However, even with this extra cost, it
is still cheaper than living in a residence
hall, said Pille.
License to get face lift
In 1978, the old Nebraska driver's
license will have a new face-yours.
After Jan. 1, all new and renewed
Nebraska driver's licenses will carry a color
photograph of the licensee in the lower left
corner, bringing the state into line with
several other states requiring photo identi
fications. Other statistical information, such as
height, weight, eye and hair color will
remain on the license.
According to Georgia Lange, secretary
to the chief driving examiner, licenses not .
scheduled for renewal in 1978 are valid
until the license expires.
If the holder of an unexpired license
wishes to get a license with his photo
graph on it. They may do so but a $2 fee
will be charged, she said.
New licenses will be' issued by the
county treasurer for $7, a one dollar
increase over the current fee.
The state law providing for the change
was LB 90, proposed by Omaha Sen.
Glenn Goodrich and approved by Gover
nor J. James Exon on April 25, 1977.
Also on that date, Exon approved
appropriations of $65,500 from the general
fund to the Department of Motor Vehicles
to carry out the new licensing.
