Barnett has said he will step down from the post. If elected, Wesely said he will leave school to devote all of his time to government, adding that "serving in the Nebras&a Legislature is a full-time job.' He said he will announce his final decision in about one month. The University Studies graduate assistant was active in campus government while an undergraduate at UNL. He was a founder and first president of the Nebraska University Public Interest Research Group, NUPIRG, a student consumer group. While with NUPIRG Wesely said he lobbied in the Legislature for passage of a returnable bottle bill and a property tax relief bill. He served on the boards of directors of the Coalition of Open Government and Citizens to Preserve Wilderness Park. In 1974 and 1975 he lobbied for the ASUN Govern ment Liaison committee and wrote a column for the Daily Nebraskan last year. Wesely is an 18-year resident of the 26th District, which is located in northeast Lincoln. He said he expects to draw support from his family and friends he made while attending schools in that area. "I expect a great deal of support, he said, "I expect to win if I run.'
