Unpaved UNL parking lots contribute
to the dust problem in Lincoln, violating
state and city air quality standards, a city
health official said.
Gary Walsh, supervisor of the air quality
sector of the Lincoln-Lancaster County
Health Dept., said parking lots and
unpaved roads on both City and East
Campuses create "a real severe problem."
According to pity regulations, dust from
the lots should not be visible beyond UNL
property lines, Walsh said. The dust pollu
tion at UNL is bad enough to warrant
action by his department, Walsh said.
So far, the department has simply con
tacted UNL officials to urge them to cor
rect the problem, he said. The best solu
tionis to pave the lots, but Walsh said
watering and use of chemical dust suppres
sants also are encouraged.
John Duve, UNL parking and traffic
coordinator said the health officials check
the overall condition of the lots' and roads
about every three months. Duve said he
thinks they are pleased with the progress
made during 1977.
"We've paved quite a few facilities in
the past two years and plan to pave as
many as we can," Duve said. Health offi
cials have not threatened to shut down the
lots, but "tried to get us to look at ways to
eliminate dust," he said.
The problem with paving the lots is
economic, he said. Duve said the cost of
paving all the lots, roads and small drives

He said the problem may become worse
instead of better. If the city decides to
extend Holdrege St., some lots now paved
may have to be replaced with unpaved lots.
Duve said the same thing might happen if
buildings are constructed on currently
paved lots.
