House vote would further expand increased taxes
Washington-The House voted to remove all limits on
wages earned by recipients of Social Security pensions,
a move that would expand still further the drastic tax
increases planned for more than 100 million Americans.
The amendment by Rep. William M. Ketchum,
R-Calif., would phase out the current limit of $3,000
in outside earnings by 1982.
The measure was approved 269 to 149 as the House
moved toward passage of a bill to keep Social Security
from going broke by drastically increasing the taxes
paid by American workers.
Racial insults
Evanston, 111. A black professor at Northwestern
University says that comedian Paul Lynde directed a
series of "racial insults" at him shortly after Lynde
appeared at the school's homecoming ceremonies.
Sociology Prof. James Pitts said that the incident
occurred at a fast-food restaurant near the campus and
was witnessed by about 10 people.

Lynde referred to "spoiled black people," and made
an obscene gesture at him.

Pitts described the incident in a letter published this
week in the student newspaper Daily Northwestern.
The newspaper also carried a letter from a white student,
John Christofersen of Batavia, 111., giving identical details
and deploring Lynde's alleged behavior.
