A return to the "way we were" will be the Huskers'
tune this week after a disappointing 24-21 loss to Iowa
State University Saturday.
The Huskers, on an uphill climb after their 19-10
opening season loss to Washington State University,
churned up four straight wins before losing to ISU.
The Huskers, expected to drop from their ninth-ranked
rating in the AP and UPI polk, now face another up
hill climb.
Husker Head Coach Tom Osborne, speaking in a noise
less locker room after the game, said the Huskers will have
to bounce back for Saturday's game against the University
of Colorado.
"We just have to start over," Osborne said. "Colorado
is the kind of game we got to win."
1-1 in conference
The Huskers drop to 4-2 with a 1-1 conference record.
The Cyclones boost their record to 5-1 and 2-0 in confer
ence play.
The Cyclones outrushed the Huskers in their win
before 76,090 fans in Memorial Stadium.

by Husker frosh
The UNL freshman football team Friday battled back
from a 13-0 first quarter deficit to down the Iowa State
University junior varsity 38-20 at Memorial Stadium.
ISU grabbed a 10-0 lead before the Husker offense
could run a play from scrimmage.
On the opening kickoff the Cyclones marched down
the field and booted a 28-yard field goal. On tne follow
ing kickoff, UNLs Anthony Steels fumbled on the re
turn and ISU recovered.
Four plays later, Iowa quarterback Virmy Cenato
threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to James Solus.
TTie Huskers finally took the offensive after the
kickoff, but ran only three plays. On third down, UNL
quarterback Mark Mauer threw an interception, which
resulted in an Iowa State field goal.
UNL came back to score 17 second quarter points to
take a 17-13 lead at the half.
Middle guard Curt Hineline set up the Huskers first
score on a fumble recovery. Mauer completed a 13-yard
pass to wide receiver Scott Woodard for the score.
Rex Eberspacher booted a 40-yard field goal and
Woodard scored on a 15-yard end around to close out
the first half scoring.
Mauer opened the second half scoring with a one
yard sneak, The Husker defense then scored a touch
; down. ISU fumbled a punt and Pat Buhrman recovered
in the end zone for a 31-13 Husker lead.
ISU came back to narrow the margin to 3 1 -20 on a 20
yard run by Solus. UNLs Steels closed out the scoring on
a 53-yard scamper.
Steels led the Huskers rushing with 13 carries for 129
yards.. Russell Gary contributed 75 yards on 10 carries.
Woodard led all receivers with three receptions for 40
yards. - '
UNL, now 3-0, goes to Columbia, Mo. Nov. 4 to face
the University of Missouri junior varsity.
ISU tailback Dexter Green rushed for 139 yards and
caught the ball five times for 48 yards. "Last year, every
body thought our win over Nebraska was a fluke," Green
said. "This year, we proved that we are no fluke."
ISU Head Coach Earle Bruce said the Cyclones' of
fensive line "took it to the Huskers."
"This team has been struggling, but they've been
coming along," Bruce said. "TheyVe worked dog-gone
hard and they're getting more confidence."

Bruce praised his defense for slowing down Husker
I-back, I.M. Hipp in the second half. Hipp finished the
game with 165 yards on 25 carries. He failed to break
loose from the Cyclone defense after his first quarter 59
yard run which put UNL ahead, 7-0.
ISU's offense held the ball 37 minutes while UNL had
it about 23 minutes. Osborne said ISU's success with third
dp wn plays was a big factor in the win.
"Whatever they did seemed to work," Osborne said.
"Our defense was stunting more the first half but some-,
times they guessed right.
"I don't think we had the enthusiasm. I thought
we had, but you have to give Iowa State credit. They just
came over here and beat us."
Husker defensive lineman George Andrews and Tony
Samuel, who each had nine tackles, said ISU ran more
sweeps last year.
"They were different this year," Andrews said. Triey
would run an outside trap play off their tackle and not
the sweeps they had last year."
Samuel said the Huskers must bounce back if they
want to stay in the Big 8 race.
Game rivalry
"We just have to put it out of our heads," he said.
"If you keep looking back, you'll get stuck in a hole.
Once you're in the Big 8 season, all the games are a rival
ry. Nobody wants to lose."
linebacker James Wightman suffered a strained knee
in the third quarter. Wightman was the Huskers only
injury.
In other Big 8 action Saturday, the University of
Colorado tied the University of Kansas, 17-17. The
University of Oklahoma edged the University of Missouri,
21-17 and Oklahoma State University downed Kansas
State University, 21-14.
