Costly 1 976 upset gives Huskers added incentive
By Pete Wegman
Playing in front of 76,000 screaming, red-clad fans in
Memorial Stadium on a Saturday usually gives the Corn
huskers all the motivation they need to win. Today, how
ever, the Huskers will have some added incentive.
First, the Huskers will be playing their Big 8
Conference home opener. Second, the Huskers will be
playing the Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones have de
feated the Huskers only once in the last 15 meetings be
tween the schools, but that win came last year and is
likely to be remembered by Nebraska fans for years to
come. '
Last year the Huskers traveled to Ames with a 4-1
conference mark, needing a win to clinch a share of the
Big 8 title. Orange Bowl officials were in attendance and
reportedly were prepared to offer a bowl bid to Nebraska
if the Huskers won. The afternoon proved to be a long
one for Nebraska fans, however, as Iowa State scored 17
first-quarter points and never trailed en route to a 37-28
upset win,
Nebraska managed only 77 yards on the ground against
the Cyclones last year, but netted 199 yards in the air.
The situation could be reversed today, however, as the
Cornhuskers appear to have developed a devastating rush
ing attack.
With an experienced offensive line consisting of
two-year lettermen Tom Davis, Greg Jorgensen, Steve
Lindquist and Stan Waldemore and one-year letterman
Kelvin Clark and a backfield with Rick Berns and I.M.
Hipp,, the Huskers have rushed for 1,498 yards in five
games a 299.6-yard average. That pace is far ahead of the
record 252.5-yard average set by the 1971 national
championship team.
The attack has been led by sophomore sensation Hipp,
with 621 yards in 76 carries, an 8.2-yard average. Hipp be
came the first Husker ever to rush for consecutive aju
yard games last week with 207 yards against Kansas State,
which followed his 254-yard performance against Indiana
a week earlier. Three weeks ago Hipp carried for 122
yards against Baylor.
Hipp, second-leading rusher in the Big 8 behind Okla
homa State's Terry Miller, ranks sixth in the nation with
a 124.2-yard average per game. A walk-on from Chaptn,
S.C., Hipp has earned Jhe respect of Iowa State head
coach Earle Bruce who said Hipp "is a tailback who can
break it from anywhere on the field."
Complementing Hipp in the backfield is Berns, a junior
who now ranks tenth on the Husker all-time rushing
charts, Berns has carried 66 times for 362 yards this
season, a 5.5-yard average. Berns has two 100-yard per-
